It seems that I have been a naughty boy. Not uncommon, but this time it's in the eyes of the mods. I've had a post removed which I put on a thread on here, and been banned from that bit of the forum.

Fair enough, it's the mods call. I appreciate that being here involves allowing them to police their rules. However I can't remember making any post that was at all racist (which is the charge levelled at me.) I can also still see the thread in question and can still see all four of my posts on it - I don't recall making any more. And none of those remaining are at all racist (or "frankly idiotic").

I'm feeling a little confused by this, and have eMailed the address given for directing all moderation queries to. And heard nothing back ...

So, a Q for the mods; have you removed a post of mine? If so, what did it say and why was it deemed racist? I appreciate that if it really was offensive (and I am quite prepared to apologise if it was) then you won't want to re-post it here but maybe you'd be so kind as to eMail it to me. If I have been offensive then fair enough, but currently I am thinking I am suffering from amnesia or there has been a mistake made somewhere.

I used that address, and am assuming (maybe wrongly) that I am being ignored.

Oli.

ETA: I see you've added "I'd just wait". Maybe that's the advice I need to take - thanks! thumbup

The man has a day job, I understand, so give him a chance.

ETA - I am not a mod.

Yes ... although some of that day job involves dealing with moderation queries ...

Fair point. I'll be quiet. Thanks.

Oli.

ETA: No? Ah. I don't know who is a mod 'round here and who isn't. I think that unless you are 'in the know' then it's not obvious.

Nope, no way - thankless job.

I know a few mods, but doubt it's the complete list. It's not a published list.

Sorry I haven't replied earlier, been busy.

You said:
And I should be allowed to own a Veyron if I want to. And those muzzies should be allowed to gang-rape schoolgirls if they want to. And we should be allowed to bomb the heck out of Palestine if we want to ...

I'm taking a hard line here, and I agree that under the new laws then there may be some instances which would possibly need an exception, but there is no 'should' about it. And being able to do anything 'because I want to' is to open the door to unfathomable problems.

Oli.
The people who reported it didn't specify exactly what they found offensive but I guessed it was the "muzzies" comment.

OK. Thanks.

As I said, I appreciate that the mods on here set the rules and have to abide by them. And - as has already been said - modding must be a pretty thankless task, so thank you for doing the thankless.

However I find myself wondering what the modding process is. Reading between the lines of your post, there was an unspecified complaint that someone found the comment offensive. It's clear there was no detail as to why, or how, or what was offensive. Maybe my judgement is different to that of the mods, but I have re-read that comment many times now, and don't see anything offensive in it at all. Indeed, it is inoffensive enough for a mod to repeat, in the open, on this thread here.

However this unspecified complaint of "I'm offended" warrants a ban from NP&E, and the sharp reprimand of "Racist (and frankly idiotic) comment". Race Card well and truly played, and the mods seemingly happy to permit it to happen.

As I said, you're the mod and therefore the rules are yours, but this strikes me as being more than a little heavy-handed, and I remain both confused and more than a little ... well, offended ... by this. Don't tell me, the irony of that is strong.

Thanks for reading. And for letting me air my thoughts here in public. Perhaps I need to go and recalibrate what I consider to be offensive. However I don't take kindly to being called a racist when there is no racist element to what was said in the slightest.

It wasn't that the "race card was played", you just made a racist comment and someone complained. The mod agreed, and so removed it.

I'd have acted in the same way. I'm really not sure why you're confused to be honest.

OK. I stand by my assertion that there was no racist element to what I said - indeed, I challenge the (gentle) reader to point out the reference to any race in my post. However I am well aware that this could rapidly descend into a 'Yes he did', 'No he didn't' type argument on the internet which does no favours to any of the parties involved.

Suffice it to say that I am dissatisfied with the moderation and consider it to be overly-heavy and pandering to the easily offended. Such actions don't help Pistonheads in the slightest.

Oli.

ETA: Thanks for hearing me out - it is appreciated.

I couldn't agree more Oli.

Some time ago in a Ramadan thread I posted a link proving muslims were selling pork products disguised as lamb in restaurants and takeaways as it was cheaper for them to buy (this was before the whole contaminated meat selling scandal hit the fan).

I was immediately banned from that forum and called a racist (sound familiar?) by 'Gazboy'- a moderator- who also sent me an email to tell me that I'm 'banned for life' from any News and Politics threads.

This small-minded, closed down attitude to islam by adherents such as he does an abject disservice to both democracy- and, ironically, their medieval belief systems.

I wouldn't dream of thinking you in any way racist Oli having read many of your posts but I'm concerned that what I used to believe to be a fairly open, liberal and honest forum has now become subject to selective moderation in favour of what amounts (currently) to less than 2% of the UK population.

Hi MB well that's what I was rudely told by Gazboy in his email.

I've been a member and regular contributor to this site since 2002 and would like to think that I've helped a few folk out in that time- especially in the Chimaera/TVR/scale model threads.

But, hey, like Oli- anyone who dares question the practices of those untouchables can and will be silenced as evinced.

Obviously I still log on to the site and contribute to other threads as I like a lot of the people on here.

I've thought about getting in touch with Garlick with regards to this but doubt it would change my pariah status.

That would be the way forward, but given what you actually said and your previous history I'm not convinced it will change anything.

As has been said many a time if anyone has concerns regarding moderation on PH then contact Garlick
