Weekend fun...Audi S4 Avant 2.7L Bi Turbo.

Picked this up in January as a replacement for my trusty A4 Sport 1.8t and I love it! My A4 was getting on a bit so I decided to look for something a bit fresher with some more power and boy does it have more power! The A4 had 150bhp and this has 265bhp and oodles of torque. Its mainly used as the weekend car as I have my Renault Trafic for work and my wife has a wee Honda Jazz. Wouldn't want it as my daily anyway due to its love of drinking petrol! Its actually not too bad if you drive sensibly but the noise from the exhaust on full boost is soooo addictive. Its completely standard and will probably stay that way, was thinking of a remap but the slightly high mileage is putting me off. I know a fellow PHer used to own it as he posted a pic of it in another thread so hopefully he'll see this, its always nice to see your old car again I think. Anyway here's a few photos, will get some better scenic ones in a couple of weeks on our wee trip to Loch Fyne

Get some downpipes and an aftermarket exhaust on it, then the noise is just wow!

What is the mileage?
There are plenty of cars with over 130kthat have been remapped with no problems.
The main priority is to make sure it has no boost leaks, as that will kill the turbos quicker than any remap will!

Thanks for the comments. It's done roughly 135000 miles now but still feels tight. Might just need to change my user name to 265bhp! As mentioned it really is understated looking, bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing which can be fun

Glad to see you're enjoying it. I was tempted several times to have it mapped etc. but there's something satisfying about keeping it standard especially as there is less and less like this around. Let's face it - it doesn't *need* any extra power

A remap totally transform them, lets be honest, they're not the fastest car by far as standard!
But when remapped, they are so much better

Depends what you want it for. This was our family car for many years - it did everything fantastically well. Family camping holidays to B road blasts in Scotland ( without family ), usually on the same trip. If you remap it for balls-out performance, it may not be as good in other areas.

Agreed, most think it's free extra power but there is always a trade off. Most times you'll find the next weakest link in the chain, which in an old perfomance Audi can be many many (expensive)things.

Mine is standard bar the exhaust and my mates Astra CDTi with a remap (probs about 195-200bhp) is as quick as it up to the NSL plus a few more leptons.

They are no slouch but it's one of those cars you drive where you just think it needs a little bit more power to go from a good car to an excellent car.

So was this your old S4? With regards to the power it's relative to what your used to I suppose. I spend all week in my work van and when I jump in the S4 it feels rapid, like seriously rapid. I was thinking about a remap because I know theres some impressive gains to be had for not too much money but it probably is powerful enough for me........for now

Exactly, the S4 is by no means a slow car. It does get a bit silly around here when in less it's a hypercar it can't be described as fast when there are so so many people out there who drive cars without 100hp.

Just re-read your post. I thought you were the guy I sold it to but since you bought it in Jan you must have bought it off him. I was the previous previous owner - I owned it for 5-6 years. Hope you got all the history. If not, I can fill in details. All I did was fit the gearbox brace but it's easily reversible.

Glad to see it's still in good use.

Yeah I got a stack of history with it, some of the receipts are eye wateringly HUGE! I seen there was a gearbox brace fitted, what exactly does this do? I take it its to reduce flex/movement?

The biggest one was fortunately under an extended warranty ! It was well looked after though.

The brace was what I called the 'wife-brace'. My missus is not the most mechanically minded. I don't know how she managed it but she could get a 'whump' out of the gear train when changing gear and accelerating. I could never get it to do the same but I was advised that the gearbox moves on it's mounts due to the torque which creates the 'whump'. There are all sorts of fixes including snub mounts etc. I tried the brace and it sorted it at the expense of a bit more vibration through the gear lever. I was happy to accept this slight inconvenience to stop me wincing everytime she overtook.

You can take it off easily, it's just a few bolts. I supplied the small original gearbox brackets that are replaced when fitted.

She now drives an automatic.

I've had 2. A standard one and a stunning 2000 Nogaro Blue one, MRC tuned to 330hp. It's well worth getting MRC Tuning to remap it, the difference is mind blowing!!
