As others have said, the free bus service is rubbish, infrequent, and whenever one does arrive any attempt at british organised queueing descends into a free for all rapidly. If you want to go to Mulsanne/Arnage then drive - one of you will have to stay off the beer but its well worth it. Or cycle. You can try walking but based on driving I wouldn't recommend it unless you fancy a few hours in the dark in french country lanes...
Never tried it during the day but we've usually used it heading out to watch night racing c.3AM/back c.7AM and you have to wait ages. Space isn't usually an issue at those times, just remember you're in France so no queueing.
The bus has a habit of changing every year, and not following the pre-published route. Mulsanne and Arnage car parks are always stops, as is the corner of the car park directly over the road from the main entrance. Sometimes the bus has also stopped near Beausjour.
The published route follows the flow of the circuit, around the top, down parallel to the N138 to Mulsanne, then across the bottom to Aranage before doubling-back on it's self. I think ever year the bus has actually done the opposite, against the flow of the circuit so down to Aranage, then across to Mulsanne before doubling-back.

Ditto the other comments, got stuck at Mulsanne a few years back and was told at 10pm busses had finished by a smiling police officer, walking down the unlit background passed hotel arbour was not very nice. The walk to arnage is well worth it only takes about an hour from the circuit. (the cars are gridlocked anyway)
We got the bus from opposite the main entrance at about 9pm last year. Didn't queue for long. Trying to get back to the main entrance from Mulsanne was a disaster. A queue of circa 200 people waiting and each bus was full with only 4-6 people getting off to make space each time. We queued for 2 hours, weren't even half way to front and joined a makeshift queue for a taxi instead... Avoid!

From the ACO website:GENERAL ENCLOSURES
The 'General Enclosure' (GE) ticket, available in 3 forms (Week, Practice, Sunday) gives access to all the spectator areas within the Circuit, including the Arnage and Mulsanne curves, the Village and the concert area.
This ticket alone does not give access to the grandstands, the Paddock (except the PITWALKS) or to any of the reserved areas.

If you're arriving at 4am for the Arnage dawn you'll probably just get straight in though
