Just finished my sitting room and looking to complete it with a new TV. Having been a reader of this forum for a long time I am pretty much set on a Panasonic (although feel free to tell me I am wrong) but unsure which model and type. Would someone be so kind as to point me in the right dircetion?

- Should I go for plasma or LED, there appears to be conflicting info out there.
- What distance would be considered too close for a 55" and ruin the picture, i.e. could this be too big?
- I will be using it mainly for SKY TV (I will be getting HD), where I watch mainly films and sport. I will also be buying a blue ray player - any recomendations?

Looking to spend up to £1,750 for both.

I'm in a similar situation so hopefully you get some suggestions.

However I would like a really good TV without all the "Smart" nonsense. Nobody in the shops seems to have the answer.

Hi, at your budget i'd look at the Panasonic TX-P55ST60 it's available at around £1299 and is an excellent set, but if you can raise your budget a bit (circa £2200) then you could get yourself probably the best
55" set on the market at the moment, it's another Panasonic the TX-P55VT65, every review has praised it to the skies, and even this months What Hi-Fi mag has a group test of 55" sets and it wins, either way both sets
are brilliant, and if bought "in store" come with a 5 Year warranty.

PM me if you want anymore details wink

You've got to remember that any mid price or higher set is going to have these extras in them anyway
and most "doubters" quickly "embrace the tech" and use some of the smart functionality anyway.

I got a LG 55" 3D LED smart TV...

In a word. Awesome.

Picture quality is astounding, I don't bother with the smart stuff at all, but works really well...

Many thanks, may I pick your brain further?

Are these plasma or LED and why is that better than the other?

I have a sight issue which means 3d tvs are of no use to me, can I switch the 3d mode off?

How does the range work, vt, gt etc?

Do you work at John Lewis?

My last tv was plasma, I chose plasma over lcd as LCD is crisper, but plasma works better for fast moving images..

However, LED is as crisp as LCD, but has much better refresh rates, and is much thinner than either, so is the ideal compromise IMO.

The 3D is completely optional, 99% of what I watch is just normal sky hd... Though it does have a nifty feature where it can turn 2D into 3D smile

Er, I don't know how the range works if I'm honest, I just picked the one I wanted...

And no, I don't work at john Lewis??? (Odd question)

I'm not a doubter I just don't want the wife playing Angry fecking birds all day when I want to watch the F1 but I get your point that whatever I buy will come with some smart tech on board.

So I guess my question should be. What TV gives more pic quality versus smart tech and therefore costs less?

As you also asked about a Blu-Ray player, see my thread. Very happy with it.

I've got a 47" Samsung Smart LED 3D TV and, with a decent source (ie HD channel, BlueRay), the picture remains absolutely crystal clear however close you get - even within a few inches.

I made the switch from a very good Panasonic plasma and have to say the picture quality on the Samsung is simply stunning - knocks the Panny into touch. That said, I did add a decent upscaling AV amp at the same time I switched.

How did I choose ? Simple - went to an electrical superstore and spent considerable time checking out their wall of TVs. Got a shortlist of which ones looked best to me (and had the features I wanted), then tried a couple DVDs (one real life, one animation) in each before settling on the LED.

Great TV and still delighted with it 18 months on.. For me, the only weakpoint is the speakers - LED TVs are superslim and the sound is completely lacking in depth. Not a problem for me as I have a full surround setup, but you might want to look at adding a soundbar to give a little more 'oomph'.

Erm sorry to burst your bubble Fidgits, but you haven't got an LED tv, it's an LCD set that uses an array of LEDs around the edge of the
panel as the light source.

I have the VT and it really is as good as everyone raves on about. The 'smart features' I only use one of, the youtube app. It really is good, theres plenty of other stuff on it but I have no need for it

We have the 55" VT65 and really impressed with it, have it hooked up to a Sonos Playbar which makes it perfect for us.. (Although I've read reviews saying the speakers in this unit are greatly improved but have never heard sound through the TV itself)

How far do you guys sit from your 55" TVs?

I'll be about 13' away and the missus says the tv is too big to view. We currently have a 32" LCD but we only sit 7' from it. We are renovating another room and I have an entire wall space for a telly.

All the guides on the net vary enormously.

55" is ideal from that distance
