The speedo on the MX5 dropped to zero a couple of times today, while the car was doing about 20-30mph. It happened a couple of months ago as well.

Any idea's on whats causing it? There are no other issues with he cluster so my first thought is the sensor?

Not sure how old your car is but on my Eunos the speedo is driven by a cable from the side of the gear box. I'd check that the connections at both the gearbox and speedo ends are tight.

Its a 54 plate Mk2.

Do they still use a cable driven speedo? I assumed these days it would be from a sensor rather than mechanical.

It will be a gearbox sensor on a 54. Quite possibly the sensor is failing.
