Just bought my 997.1 yesterday. Annoyingly came with only one key.

What's the cheapest way of getting a replacement and how much did it cost?

Not sure you have an option as if your key is lost it will cost a thousand quid or more and is a real headache to replace all alarm codes and get towed , at least a week off the road etc..

Fairly sure you could save a bit by getting a used key with the same part number (so same frequencies), getting a blank cut (looks like a VW blank to me - some guys on ebay can do this perfectly from a photograpgh) and getting an indy to re-programme the key.

Ah, the greatness of owning an old Porker. When I was quoted £30.00 for just a blank for my 968 I decided not to bother.

Then just happened to pop into my local DIY shop as they have a key cutting service there. Shown the bloke my Porsche key on the off chance, and low and behold, he an exact blank hung up behind the counter.

Total cost including cutting, £6.00 Result.

My 996 came with one key, went to my local Indie, 911Sport, ordered new key, they provided part number 99663724440, and part no 99653893200, key head and key shaft, total cost £145.48, they set it so I could use it on my car, result.

Someone has a spare key for your car, what will your insurer say if it's stolen and recovered with no ignition damage ?. When I bought an old Volvo V50 with one key/fob a new fob recoded the immobiliser, not sure if it's the same with a 997.

That's my worry too! But then what's to say an owner couldn't sell a car with 2 key and have a third made up to keep so they could steal your car?

Get the dealer to confirm there are only your 2 keys coded to car when they pair the new key. Check OPC price and then compare it with your local Indy. I think £250 would be good going for a cut key with remote. Look at eBay if you don't fancy that. You'll still need it paired to the car.

The key is like this one I presume (check exact Bosch part number:

and the blank is like this:

Then its just a reprogramming job....
