Tappidy(ish) sound to engine... i think.

Hi all,

I posted a thread a while go pertaining to tapping noise to the engine. Turned out to be one of those thingys under the manifold instead of the manifold itself. Had offending item replaced a couple of months ago...

Everything sounding grrrrrr and lovely...then...

i noticed a strange tappidy sound from the engine when i switch on. This sound lasts maybe 2-4 minutes... then the engine sounds fine.

If the engine is warmed up (70 degrees on the dial) i don't get the tappidy noise when i switch on.

The noise is pretty loud... heard it over Lisa Loeb's cd.

any suggestions as to probable cause?

Are you leaving a long time between uses? And dose it go after a few moments? Just wondering if it rattles a bit until the oil has got back round the engine.

Synthetic oil ? Others may disagree, in my case coming off it cured my hydro lift rattles.

Noise maybe from manifold gaskets blowing/bolts lose, had a similar problem. Changed the gaskets and fitted new bolts.

Noise similar to tappets, maybe as engine warms up the gap closes hence reduction in noise, mine you could hear all the time, but all better now

I had the exhaust manifold gasket changed and then had the same symptoms you described after about 4 weeks - a ticking noise before the engine warmed up

In my case it turned out to be the manifold nuts needed retightening - the noise then disappeared :-)

Sounds like the lifters bleeding down when the car's been parked for a few days. Is the car due for an oil change, maybe the oil's lost some viscosity and thinned a bit.

Thanks for the comments. I went to the Surrey TVR club dinner last night and the suggestions as to the noise related to lifters and oil.

i'll put the car in Thursday and highlight the problem/noise and pass on the suggestions.

(BTW - it has synthetic oil in at the mo.)

another option is a little 'piston slap' which [if not severe] is fine and present on 60% or so of cars until they warm up I am reliably told...

The Bible does suggest that as oil pressure builds at start up, some tapping can be normal...

We have a noise at start up to - but only for a second or two and then it stops. Only does it when cold. took it to Dom week before last and he reckoned a lzy lifter.
The day after lots more noises and used 2.5 litres of oil in 180 miles.
Car is now in at Power but I suspect it's oil related too - used 5/40 but now going to change to 15/50 as seems to be the most popular concencus.
Will update in general once I know what it is.

Also, seems to run worse on Optimax and very poorly on Ultimate so have already switched back to Sainsburys Super which it seems much happier with.

Rovers are old type engines with large internal clearances. They like thicker oils 15 or 20 weight seems good. Then they can pump volume even at low pressure.

how strange... the noise started after i switched from sainsbury super unleaded to optimax... coincidence? hmmm.

i'll do a test i.e. switch back. wouldn't it be crazy if the noise stopped?

Our noise is still there so the fuel made no difference - it just runs better on the Sainsbury's stuff. Guess yours is the opposite.

Mine was the bloody cam - only done 26k - time for - much more power me thinks......
