HELP! What speed will set a camera off?
Discussion
I inadvertently went through a gatso on a quiet DC last night. Speed limit was 60, i was doing about 80 as i entered then stood on the brakes and probably dropped to about 70 by the other end of the road markings.
I had blinding sun in my rearview mirror so couldn't actually see if the camera flashed or not. Incidently, this was the same blinding sun that would have prevented me from seeing if I had anyone behind me when i had to stand on the brakes, perhaps another reason for getting rid of the bloody things but that's a seperate argument.
Anyone know if I would have been likely to set it off and if so, what speed do you get NIP's for in a 60 limit?
I know you have to be a bit stupid these days to get zapped by a camera, i mean there's plenty of warning, but that's exactly what i was...stupid...and not concentrating. My own fault if i get done i suppose
Many thanks
Andy

This isn't going to help much, but the trigger speed of a camera is whatever the operator has set it to!
As has already been pointed out, different forces will have different guidelines.
The old "10% + 2" (not 3, BTW) has only ever been a rule of thumb and should certainly not be relied upon any more, particularly in these 'zero tolerance' times.

Was it signed as such? NSL for dual carriageway is 70mph.
No, Unfortunately. This one is definately posted 60 (A34 between Stoke and Stafford)
I think I'm doomed to be honest, 80ish mph (maybe a bit more) about ten yards before the dotted lines and camera and a lot of 'snaking under breaking' trying desperatley to shed some speed. All I can hope for is a lack of film in the camera if it did indeed go off. It's not so much the fine and 3 points that bother me (if that's what the decision is), it's the inevitable row I'm in for with the 'holier than thou' missus! She who never sets cameras off and is therefore a far better and safer driver than me as she spends all day looking at the speedo and nothing else!
Anyone know how much your insurance goes up by for 6 points as opposed to the original 3 I had until this unfortunate incident? God, the bloody thing hasn't even landed on the doormat yet.

0-10% loading for 3 points, 0-25% loading for 6.
My broker said, "we don't penalise for speeding tickets as everyone has them"

Who's your broker? He sounds like the sort of guy I'd like to speak to!
