Right, i'm possibly being a little special today. But cannot for the life of me find a replacement hose for my 4.2.
Am i correct in thinking the hose that goes to the pot under the drivers air box is an Oil breather hose? Mine seems to be fairly straight whereas all the ones online have bends/kinks in them.
Any links/part numbers greatly appreciated.

That hose normally has a couple of preformed sharp bends in it to fit to the timing cover vent. The one in your picture is not original.
I may have a new spare you can have as I have put a proper catch tank on my car.
Ahh! So i'm not going mad, that explains it. Anyone have a picture of it? Hoping i can go down the Samco route.I may have a new spare you can have as I have put a proper catch tank on my car.

that is normal set up for early 4.2s you can either remount your breather housing on the air box to point the outlet forward fit the later breather outlet on the timing cover and fit the later hose or just get a piece of straight samco hose to replace the originalEdited by APMAUTO on Wednesday 12th June 20:17

Yup, agredd. I'm going with straight 22mm Samco and stainless clips. Simples.Edited by APMAUTO on Wednesday 12th June 20:17

Many thanks,

This is what I put on my 4.2 a while ago. It has definitely stopped all the crud getting into the air box and it periodically needs the sludge cleaning out of it.
Not so sure about the snake pit of braided hose now. It seemed like a good idea at the time, as did the metal connectors
Its always looked too DIY I think.

What about something like this?

I'd like to change the messy system that seems to cover the underneath of my car in oil. Although at least it stops the rot!

Hi Paul
IIRC I got the fuel hose from Vehicle wiring Products
I think the original was 7mm but I can't remember if I went for 6 or 8mm.
I originally tried a catch tank that vented to atmosphere through a filter but it had 2 major drawbacks - MOT fail and the stench of oil fumes.
So second time around I worked on the basis of the original set up in that it is a 'closed' system that vents into the air boxes not to atmosphere. I piped it to both sides to avoid any significant difference in the mixture on one half of the engine.
The outlet on the cam chest (which is straight not the early angled one) is connected via a 90 degree silicon reducing elbow. The inlet to the catch tank is a larger bore metal hose take off (hence the reducing elbow). I drilled out the hole in the tank with one of those triangular section drill bit/cutter things. The tank is packed with stainless steel pan scrubbers that I replace twice a year - disgusting job, especially when you drop the damn things and splatter goop on the nice clean freshly polished panel in front of the engine
Not sure if it makes a significant difference but there is certainly no oil in the offside air box now.
I should get it down to Joolz for a check over and magic mapping session to see if the engine rebuild and mods like the catch tank have made any difference.
First of all I have to finish the re-carpet of the interior and fit the new discs and pads (must ring Brummie and order some) and then get some more miles on the engine. All this fine weather and all I've been doing is driving it in and out of the garage, which is a tad strange sat on the floor with no seats in!

Yup that's the one I tried. I think I still have it kicking around the garage somewhere. The smell of oil fumes was quite strong. I also wasn't happy with the reduction from the cam chest hose to the small inlets on the can. I was worried about pressure build up in the cam case at high revs. Although I'm a complete novice with the theorising so may have been worrying unduly.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/0-5-Litre-Oil-Catch-Tank...

Has anyone seen any pics of what the AJP race engines had?
I took the slightly simpler/lazy route.. cleaned everything up and change the hose. Simples.
