Hi all,

I'm about to do an oil change and as I've had a drippy sump plug for sometime thought I'd replace it and the washer (the likely culprit) with a magnetic one. I found somewhere that does these, however it's arrived and is miles too small (for a 350i I think). Long shot, but would anyone happen to know the thread size for the plug? I don't really want to take mine out and drain the oil until I have the replacement at hand...

Many thanks
Paul

I think, you might be safest waiting to see if anyone else agrees with me!

1/2 bsp sounds about right its a really odd size.

I've just replaced mine in the chim with one of these

http://www.stahlbusuk.com/oil-drain-valve.php

with sumps at over 300 quid, 30 odd quid for one of these valves to replace teh sump plug seemed worth a punt. dead easy and clean to change the oil now too...

got one going on the racers dry sump tank as soon as i've figured out the size!!

1/2" BSP a really odd size? Maybe on a Continental car! Off the top of my head I don't know what else it might be (unless 3/8" BSP which is obviously a bit smaller)... I do recall my Esprit sump was 1/2" BSP as I got a new plug for it... £12 from Lotus? Er no: £1.49 for a central heating brass blanking plug from B&Q.

I changed mine for a SH version a couple of years back - will dig the old one out and have a measure later.

For 300 quid a pop I'll sell some of my old sumps!

Based on the diameter and thread pitch of the one I managed to measure, I agree that it's a 1/2" BSP

Had my 350i plug out today for an oil change. Must be 1"bsp I would think. Don't forget that copper washers are malleable and although I wouldn't normally advise refitting the same washer, if you clean it up it should seal fine

Cheers

Inch BSP? You'd be able to get your hand in and finger your crank!

........and do, regularly!!!!!

Actually, I'm lying, aren't I!!! Compulsive habit!

It's about 1" thread diameter! But I'm not taking it out to check cos all my oil will run out!!

Cheers and thanks for reminding me what a numpty I am!

the actual diameter of mine was about 8/10", but having taken other measurements, and checked my threads book, 1/2" BSP it was.

Thanks to all for their advice on this.

FYI, the part number for the Sump Plug is 603659 and the correct washer (there are lots) 213961L (bought from Brook Wells landrover for a couple of quid).

Was slightly concerned about the need to prime the oil pump, so attached a couple of clamps on the pipes either side of it prior to draining...

Filled the new oil filter and screwed into place, then filled up with oil (took 6 litres to get it up to the max). removed clamps and she started on the button without any oil pressure issues...phew!

Thanks again
Paul

Either make or get yourself one of these

I whip out my dizzy and run up the oil pressure on an electric drill after every oil change. Only takes 10 mins for peace of mind
