I guess it was bad news after the inital post of sheared sprocket.

Very sorry.

A couple of 4.2 engines on ebay from a premium breakers.

I take it valve and piston damage?

If it makes you feel better i'm replacing for MOT

Drive shaft, Rear droplinks, front drag bushes.

Noticed while i was under fuel pump needs re-wiring, Slave leak, oil transfer pipe leak, timing cover leak, worn steering boots, worn top ball joint boot & front brake overhaul.......

All offerings to the god of speed!

Are you sure your own engine isn't repairable?

Used engines are usually far cheaper than repairing damaged engines. How much more repaired engines are worth is debatable.

Never been one to prescribe to the "throw a secondhand engine in it" philosophy. If the engine wears out or breaks, surely it should be removed and rebuilt rather than inheriting another unknown engine and its prospective problems. If you can't afford to fix it properly sell it......

So if it's put a rod through a liner and the block what do you do?

There's no harm putting a used engine in, if you do it yourself you'd be looking at a £2k bill, not £4k plus for a rebuild.

If it was a used engine, and diy, would it be prudent to strip and inspect, if its history wasn't known?

For piece of mind.

I'd still rebuild a used engine. I wouldn't put more potential problems into my car.

Each to there own. Some people cannot afford that luxury though.

There's nothing wrong with taking a used engine from a car that's been crashed and pitting it straight in. Probably less risk than when people bring back cars from the dead when they've been sat around for years. smile

And what's to say the engine builder doesn't make a mistake? Only speaking from experience as I've just had a very reputable one do just that. laugh Not an AJP though.

Either way is fine by me providing the outgoing engine, if repairable, gets repaired by someone. AJPs are far too rare to be weighed in if repairable.
