I'm currently on a bargain car session as I need my cash for other things. I had been driving round in a LS400, but PH'er Judas posted the following advert

Judas said:
2000 XJR V8, silver with charcoal leather and burr walnut. Big Brembo brake option with 18" BBS split rims, new tensioners 5k miles ago. £1250 no offers - this is the best price!"
Well, that seemed interesting…

A bit more detail

The basics

This 2000 XJR was run for a couple of years by journalist John Barker as part of Evo magazine's fast fleet - whether that's a good thing or not is up to you... It's in silver with charcoal leather interior and the usual bits of wood. It comes with a decent stereo, a sat-nav system of sorts (one of those early types that merely bark instructions at you and display misleading arrows on a tiny display). It has xenons, heated, electrically adjustable seats, heated front screen, cruise control, multi-function steering wheel, climate control and CD changer. It also has CATS adaptive dampers, the uprated Brembo brakes and 18" BBS Milan split rim wheels shod with Pirelli P-Zero Asymmetrico tyres with plenty of tread left. The car comes with two keys/alarm fobs, all owners manuals and a valve kit for pumping up the tyres (2 x valve extensions, 4 x spare cover screws, 3 x screw removal tools - all in a natty black leatherette pouch).

IMPORTANT UPDATE!

I've just had an email from John Barker, the Evo journalist who ran the car for two years from new.

He says:
"I remember that car fondly. Dickie Meaden nicknamed it 'the Granny Magnet'. Thirsty, I remember, especially around Donington where it was surprisingly effective. Lots of comfy, quick and not too stressful miles in my hands. So, not a bad thing, I think!

" I remember Tim Milne was at the Donington evo trackday chasing me in his Mitsubishi Evo. I watched him in the rear view mirror falling off into the gravel at Coppice."

Now, how's that for an endorsement? wink

Ok, let's get the bad stuff out of the way first...

There is always a reason why usually expensive things (like XJRs) are cheap. In this case it's because this car was subject to a total insurance loss and declared a Cat D. I can't remember what year it was but it certainly surprised the chap I bought it from when I did a check before handing over the cash.

It needs some tidying up paintwork-wise: the front wings are starting to bubble between the wheels and the doors. It's not too bad at the moment and certainly fixable. There are also a couple of stone chips on one edge of the sunroof that need sorting. Both bumpers are scuffed and need repainting and finally, some kind soul thought it would be fun to key the car down the driver's side from the front wing to the passenger door. All four wheels need refurbishing and rebalancing (bit of judder at 70-ish). I recently fitted a new upstream lambda sensor (a real bugger of a job) to address a low revs hesitation issue but occasionally there is still some momentary hesitation when 'booting' it. Finally, the top pulley bearing (I think) on the supercharger belt is a bit squeaky when cold.

Still reading? Good, because from here on it gets better!

Although the last stamp in the service book is at 65,000 miles, the previous owner did not skimp on things - there is a sheaf of invoices for all the work done on the car totalling over £16,000! The key worry on any V8 Jag of this era is the cam chain tensioners. Not only have they been replaced twice, the last change in 2009 was at 142924 miles - that's less than 5000 miles ago in old money.

In terms of electrics, everything works. Air con gets nice and cold, heated seats get toasty in the winter, heated front screen, er, heats up, CD changer changes CDs, electric seats do all the things electric seats are meant to do. The leather interior is in good shape - there's the expected wear for a car of this age but the driver's bolster is a lot better than cars I've seen with much lower mileage. With all the black leather and wood, if you like 1980's bachelor pad chic, this is the car for you!

Taxed until end of September 2013, MOT until 27 October 2013 - no advisories. 3 previous owners.

Located in Nottinghamshire, just off junction 27 of the M1.

Oh, there's a space-saver wheel in the boot, original tool kit in the engine bay, plus a spare driver's side wing mirror cover and spare chrome wheel rim finisher (or whatever they're called).

Performance: it goes like stink - it's a 370bhp supercharged V8, what did you expect? wink

Economy: yeah, get real - see above. If it's a concern you need to re-think your car plans. Careful driving will return mid-20s but let's be honest, it's too much fun to be driving like Miss Daisy.

Why am I selling: I currently have 2 x 4-litre V8s and a 5.4 litre V12 - even George Osborne couldn't fudge the maths frown

As I said at the start, this is probably the cheapest XJR V8 out there and priced to sell. It's a real hoot to drive - either cruising on the motorway or having some fun on the back roads. For a mere £1250 you could get yourself a slice of prime British beef!

More photos available on request.

This is almost certainly the cheapest XJR V8 in the country. So don't ask me what my best price is - it's the price stated in the advert - no stupid offers, no part-exs, no Nigerian princes wanting me to deal with shipping agents. Unlike many advertisers, I'd rather not try to cover up any shortcomings with the car - instead I'm being brutally honest to make sure that anyone who gets in touch isn't wasting their time or mine.
and then more info started to come out, this is the writeup of the car from Evo

Jaguar XJR-R

don't mind admitting that I was a bit apprehensive as I piloted the XJR up the M1 towards Donington for the second of our track evenings. At the first Easytrack event at the swooping Midlands circuit I'd been demo'ing the 340R, and the Lotus had pounded round for almost the whole three hours without a care. I was less confident that the 370bhp, 1800kg Jag would do the same. In particular, I feared for the tyres and brakes, though I was also concerned about how wieldy it would be.

The XJR isn't the sort of car you throw around on the road – most unseemly – and so I wasn't sure what to expect of it on track. In preparation, I topped up the oil and spent 15 minutes raising the tyre pressures to the handbook recommendation for sustained 100mph-plus motoring. It takes a quarter of an hour because the sexy BBS alloys don't have protruding valves; one of the 'split-rim' fixings hides the valve and you have to screw in an extension before you can get the airline on. Unless the rims are spotless you can guarantee to end up with grubby fingers but I was glad I'd bothered because all four tyres were at a lowly 24psi. I filled up the tank with superplus, too, and reset the trip computer to see how low the mpg would go.

The Jag looked rather incongruous in the pit lane amongst the Caterhams and Elises, like an ocean liner surrounded by a flotilla of tender craft. Drifting out onto the track with the air conditioning wafting a cool breeze through the luxurious cabin, I felt a bit daft wearing a helmet and racing gloves but after half a lap I realised that it was going to be a very enjoyable evening. I expected the XJR to have the legs down the straights but its neat, solid composure through the bends was amazing.

For a big, weighty car it turned in with remarkable precision and enthusiasm and then powered through them briskly with minimal roll. Third gear was good for almost the whole track, just a drop to second to use a bit of engine braking to help the brakes slow it from 120mph into the chicane.

I wasn't the only one surprised by its pace. The Elises weren't any quicker, the 3-litre BMW Z3 was easy meat and I kept Tim Milne's Evo VI behind for a lap. He was quicker through a couple of the turns, the long, long Redgate in particular, but the Jag didn't seem to be holding him up too much elsewhere, or maybe he was just amused by the XJR's tweaked-up stance and the occasional fog of wheelspin.

It was pretty clear half-way through the evening that, despite its speed, the XJR wasn't hurting its tyres or brakes. Sure, a bit of rubber had worn off the outer edge of the left front Pirelli and there was a tell-tale seam of smeared rubber on each band of tread, but the P-Zeros didn't look ragged by any stretch. They were no worse after three hours, while the Brembos actually felt better than they ever have on the way home. Remarkable. Thank you, Easytrack. I'll definitely be giving the Jag another outing.

Oh, and the trip computer? Well, 77 miles from a tankful is rather thirsty – to save you the maths, that's a wallet-wilting 5.3mpg...

Still with me?

So, what happened next? I emailed Judas, we had a quick email exchange and I had I think. I was 50/50 and originally backed out, my Lexus was running great and I didn't need to get into another car that could cost a fair amount of cash to get right. I only had 1 parking space at the flat too, and already have 3 cars, so it wasn't something I could buy and play around with at my leisure, if I bought it the Lexus would have to go pretty quick.
Remember that bit in the advert that said £1250 no offers? Technically we stuck to that, I didn't make an offer, but that wasn't to say an offer couldn't be made to me. wink Judas was off to look at a car on Sunday and it would be easier if the XJR was gone by then, if I could pick it up quickly would I do a deal at £1k. fk it, I thought. It turns out I would do that! biggrin
I headed up on the train and picked her up on the Saturday. In the flesh she is much better than the advert described. Sure she has a few scratches, but some touch up paint and wet and dry will make that a lot better.

A few issues to look at, mainly the gearbox was slow to respond and the hesitation issue, also the check rear lights warning comes on every so often, but the lights are fine when checked. Bit more investigation needed on that one, could be the brake pedal switch, could be a dodgy bulb, could be a dodgy connection. We did the deal and I drove home. She handled lovely and felt very tight and well put together.

First thing to do was to look at getting the wheels balanced to cure a 70mph shimmy. Successfully done, however when the car was on the ramp I had a look underneath and the gearbox was coated in oil. That could well be a good reason why it wasn't as smooth as it could be wink
The wheel balancing sorted out the shimmy, but the wheels where swapped around while they did it, not realising she had 45 profiles on the rear and 40 on the front! That caused the ASR to have a fit, but they have now been swapped back and all is well. At some point I need to get the same size tyres all round really wink

Dropped her into a local specialist to get her serviced (including a plug change), get the gearbox oil leak fixed, change the gearbox oil and filter and look into the hesitation issue. She was given back to me on wednesday night with the gearbox sorted and the car in general feeling a lot better, but not 100% still, however I am popping into the garage on Saturday morning to pick up an new MAF, which is the source of all the hesitation apparently. Cleaning it out didn't help, swapping one from another car did. The price for all this work? £730 smile

The independent was very complimentary about her and think I got a bargain, she has very little rust (which is a usual failing of XJs of this era) and a bushing which is slightly split and may not pass the next MOT. The main issue left to resolve is the brake discs which will need replacing at some point in the near future, but due to having the Brembo upgrade, this isn't cheap! OEM comes in at just under £2k! biggrin Luckily aftermarket can be had for £530 fitted, so that will be on the cards in a few months.

More reports soon, especially if the MAF really does sort her out smile

Here she is, £1000 pounds of glorious big cat biggrin

A bit more research has shown up a few more articles on her, via the wayback machine. For some reason the Evo site doesn't go far enough back?

Final review of it as the fast fleet car:

Marvellous purchase for £1k. Good on you for chucking some ££'s at it to sort the niggles. With the discs done it'll still be a super car to smoke about in for a year or so.

The issue I have, well it isn't really an issue as such, is that she will always be a Cat D, so how much do I spend?
The way I see it, the costs at the moment are really just general service and maintenance costs, which could easily have been spent on a £3k car, so i'm not worried about those. I've effectively just had a much cheaper entry ticket smile

The question is around the more cosmetic issues, I doubt i'll spend too much on them as it will hardly make any difference to the value. For example, my plan for the scratches is to tackle them myself with wet and dry, t-cut, polish and touch up paint. Not really done that sort of thing before, but I can't make it worse, right? wink I was actually going to start that last weekend, but thought it best to get her checked over mechanically first as I could have ended up being wasted effort!

I might get the upper pulley upgraded, as I think that is the source of a squeak, so if she has to be replaced anyway, who am I to argue with a 40bhp increase... It's not that expensive either, which is nice (around £250 fitted I think).

It's a £1000 car in bits all day anyway, so do the supercharger pulley upgrade and then drive it into the ground. You're right the CAT D will always make it difficult to sell and fetch any sensible money, so just enjoy it. If it pops or becomes economical to repair I'll buy the splits off you for the right price

Heh, I'll be sure to post on here if I need to sell the wheels. According to the receipts she has had 3 wheels replaced over the years already, I expect they aren't that hard wearing.

Remember when Top Gear did a head to head test of a BM and a Merc and asked the general public how much they thought they cost? This is that. You lucky, lucky man. Joe Public will assume that's a £20/30k motor I should think.

Looks outstanding, and the parts ought to be worth a bit, otherwise I'm sure a PHer would have it off you, owing to your honest write-up and the previous history. But no negative talk. It's all, all, all positive. To quote the younger generation, so much win right there.

5 owners in total including me, which seems to have been:

Evo up to 40000 miles
Owner 2 up till 142000 miles
Owner 3 up till 145000 miles
Judas up till 147500 miles
Me.

Owner 2 was the Cat D culprit, yet weirdly I don't have a receipt for that (he was the receipt bunny), I wonder what it was. It seems to have happened at around 130000 miles, and he put another 12000 on it after that before selling 2 years later. The only receipt after that is for a new set of wheels 4 months later. I know the BBS Milans are expensive, but not expensive enough to write off a 7 year XJR I expect wink

That's not usually good news when you see 3 owners that quickly - but I guess you've taken the bit between your teeth and are spending money on the old girl.

Means she's not a shed tho - if she was a shed you'd just have driven her until she died - you're actually running her as a car - you may even step into the territory of 'restoration' at some point.

I remember that in Evo - lovely old smoker - nice colour too

Some of those repair prices are scary tho

To be fair, it was a 4 year period where it switched from owner 3 to judas to me, so it isn't that bad. It's only owner 3 that is the missing link...

Owner 2 seemed happy to throw money at any problem via the main dealer, which is bad for him, but good for me I think wink
