Caen to LM

Hi All - landing in Caen on Friday morning - anyone got any tips on the route down - go with the sat nav? or are there any good deviations?

As it's Friday...and you probably want to get to town for the driver's parade then I'd stick to the main roads.

Viz: Caen to Falaise on N158, then pick up M-way(s) SP Alencon/Le Mans (A88 and A28).

I'd try and avoid the town centre any time after 1pm...traffic will be building up with locals & others trying to get to circuit. So, I'd head for your campsite/accommodation, get sorted, and then jump on the tram to the city centre...a few beers and something to eat join in the festivities!

The last time I went that way I set the sat nav to avoid motorways, and the shortest route. What it gave me was some fantastic fast roads with no other traffic and not a copper in sight.

Think we are going to avoid the main roads. Head on the back roads but aim for Beaumont for lunch then might try the Classic British Welcome for the first time.

Roy e6. That back road route would be of interest to us if you can remember or have a copy of it.

That route will be crawling with Gendarmes.

There is no real way to avoid Caen to Falaise, after that there are a myriad of routes. In 11 years we have never duplicated a route between Le Mans and Caen

I'm dropping in on family South of Caen on the Thursday. I then head on down the A84 towards Rennes and across to Fougeres, have done it before and a nice run.

We land on Thursday morning from Portsmouth into Caen. Going to take in some culture first at the D Day beaches but then head down to Le Mans to arrive early evening. Also looking for an alternative to the main motorway road....the Sat Nav with no motorways may work from the D Day beaches.... where is a nice place to aim to stop for lunch around 2ish do you think ?

It is on the list just depends on time

Sounds like.... avoid the motorways for a cross country blast and drop into the Friday service - then check out some of the beaches on Monday.

I agree with the Gendarmes comment, but thought with a Friday arrival, OP will probably want to get down there and set up before enjoying the buzz of the circuit/campsite etc.

Fair point. We normally catch a thursday overnight ferry and get t our Chateau about 3pm, but we take a long lunch and a long coffee breaks. These days we go out to St Malo and return through Caen. The Chateau is halfway between Le Mans and Tours which gives us a wide choice of routes

Long time no meet indeed. Will you be attending the PH Friday event? Is the kid in tow this year over the Father (/FIL?).

We're normally Karting Nord regulars, but have ended up with Garage Verte this year. An unknown to us. You still on Houx?

No worries, I'll probably see you down there, not on Houx but Houx Annex this year

No mountain bike this year as I'm taking the MNR, heading over with Paulbav and some of his mates, no kids or FIL either.......the kids keep going on about me going without them!!
