However does make me a little sad that progress has given us something so far removed from the beauty of the classic liners.

I guess it's a bit like the mini and the latest small cars (which are really big ones trying to look small)

What is quite funny is that the Allure of the Seas is actually just less than twice the displacement of Titanic.

Don't forget they do different jobs the Titanic was a big ferry, it was a means of crossing the Atlantic quickly and safely. Modern cruise ships are floating hotels and are the destination.

Sometimes bigger is not necessarily better. It just looks like a big block of flats...with a ships hull shoved underneath.

It is progress though. Looks aren't all that important, you should see these things on the inside.

I was on Ventura last year. Pig ugly thing, it really is:



Probably the worst looking of all the liners. Does it matter? Nope, inside it was lovely. Had a brilliant time, didn't get seasick once (unusual for me) and am looking forward to getting onto Independance of the Seas in October (which looks a HELL of a lot better than Ventura from the outside too! )

I cruised on Independance a couple of years ago; really impressive ship! I'm sure you'll have a great time mate.

I start my Deck officer cadetship with Royal Caribbean in September! Can't wait to get stuck in and can't imagine how spacious the bridge will be compared to a frigates.

The bridge

Been on her sister the Azura. Very nice. Been on norwegian epic which I think is next in line size wise after the two oasis class boats. Now that thing is ugly. It looks like a floating Lego brick. However, inside is truly amazing and so is the pool deck. Lovely boat-come-floating Vegas hotel.

The bridge

Yep. The curved bit right at the top that you think might be the bridge is an adults-only spa-type thing. It seemed to be closed all the time I was on board, which seemed a great waste of the best view in the house.

That photo seems to show passengers on top of the bridge; I never found that bit - in fact the outside routes are quite a puzzle; needlessly complex I thought.

I've never really seen the Allure(sic) of cruising tbh, but i guess, at least when you're on it, you don't have to look at it! ;-)

Every time i see a modern ship, i can't help but think it looks at bit like this:

Handy too! If one day you can see more containers, but they look a bit smaller, the front of your ship has probably fallen off............
