You must have a really good camera

Had my first one of those last night.

Was showing a friend some candids I had done on the street in London and all I got was "They're really good, you must have a really good camera".

It kind of annoyed me as I had worked quite hard to make those dozen shots but I guess it is a compliment.

How does anyone else take that particular comment?

You have to explain in terms they understand. My hairdresser once said I must use a really expensive camera. I said I was thinking of getting some really expensive scissors so I could cut hair as well as her. She was very apologetic, just hadn't thought of it like that before.

I usually mention that Miles Davis had a really good trumpet. That generally shuts them up.

Most people would probably spend the next hour or so trying to find out who Myels Dayviz is - that could keep them quiet for a while.

Obviously your circle of knowledgable musical friends and acquaintances would know the answer but I would assume they would probably not make the "good camera" observation in the first place.

I tried that at work, showed them a few pics I was happy with - all I got was "Oo, thats come out well....."

Hehe.

Well of course I am far too young to know who on earth the trumpeter Miles Davis might be.

As I type this I can hear some old person's music (#Heavy #Metal i understand it is called) being purveyed to a bunch of wet (it's been raining) nonces a mile or so distant.

I doubt Kilometers Davies has appeared much on their horizon.

In fact they probably have little idea about anything at the moment.

I got snide remarks for mentioning George Melly on another forum. Except the originator was at least 55 so no excuse really. 'Who is George Smelly anyway?!' he interjected, luxuriating in playground ignorance.

I had this from a colleague a few months ago, along with incessant quizzing about post-processing and "but this has been retouched, right?" kind of questions. Shortly after, he got a new DSLR and came along with me to a race.....very predictably he concluded that it's not all about the camera and is "harder than it looks"

I like that approach.

Coming at it the other way ... maybe:

"Nope, all cameras are so good these days that all but the most incompetent numpty can take perfect shots of anything."

Combine the two in the course of conversation (if the chance arises) should confuse them well enough.

I don't have this problem, people look at my pics and say, 'you must have a pretty crap camera'
