Paying at tolls

I'm travelling alone in a Caterham and part of my route will involve toll booths, any ideas of how I could pay without having to unbuckle my harness, climb out and walk around the car.

A passenger or avoid tolls is the simple answer but looking for something more ingenious.

Small kids shrimping net, you know with bamboo handle. The deluxe version has a clothes peg added for stopping your ticket blowing away when proffered to the tollmeister. Stows neatly in passenger footwell. Ou can go really upmarket and get one that people use to fish out foreign objects from hot tubs but if you are in easy reach of the seaside......

A couple of us went to Spa end of May for the Classic.

Due to road works on the M-way to Liege, we took a Southerly route and ended up on toll roads around Valenciennes. The guy without a passenger paid on his credit card...Still had to get out, but it was a much quicker transaction at toll booth.

If you don't have a "doofer", simply undo the harness in plenty of time and run round. It adds about 20 seconds onto the job.

I'm travelling down on my own too in my MNR with a full roll cage, I've been worrying about the tolls and holding people up, while unbuckling the harness clambering out etc....

As I'm heading down from Caen I'm thinking of setting the sat nav to avoid motorways, may turn into a nice run down with no worries about tolls.....but I'm sure I'll end up on the motorway holding people up at the tolls

My dad is the same in his Westfield, we both bought Sanef Transponders for £20 (refundable deposit)

As has been mentioned, my solution in 2011.





Can't find the other photo I have, but also went with a childs fishing net to collect change after paying.

Only thing worth noting. If you decide to go with the grabbing claw thing, get the longest you can find. Its a lot further than you think to the ticket machine !

These are great. Having just travelled back from nice, they saved a shed load of time, you can use the automated 30kph lanes and avoid all the queues. Well recommended

The amount of times I've had to jump out and run round. Not sure it solves the payment side of things though.

Thats what the fishing net was for.

Arrive at booth and place ticket in net. Pass out of window and let operator retrieve it.
Wait for amount owed to be displayed on the digital read out board they have.
Pass out €20 note in net.
Wait for change to be deposited in net.
Shout out a quick 'Merci"
Drive on.

The time and hassle it saved was fantastic.

I bought 10 of them for LM in 2008, all had Westfields, get a cup from McDonalds for the change.

Who needs a screen? If you still have your hands you hold the beep up and it works alright. Used it for years like that with the D-type (which had a Perspex screen).

According to autoroutes.fr there are only two tolls between Calais and Le Mans:

Abbeville Nord : Péage : 7.90 EUR
Le Mans Nord : Péage : 22.50 EUR

So that’s a maximum of 4 stops (assuming one or both are not fixed price). It probably takes 30-60 seconds to get out and walk around the car. Is it really worth going to all that hassle to shave 2-4 minutes off your journey? Not sure what the people that have saved “loads of time” using a doofer would have been doing at the toll booth otherwise.

I’ve been stuck a lot longer than 30-60 seconds behind “locals” rummaging round for change or a credit card at the pay booth after we’ve all been sitting in a queue for 20 minutes when they could have got the money/card ready.

Are you travelling by yourself in your car or by yourself and not in a group? If you are travelling with another car and they have a passenger, give them the money to pay on your behalf and follow them in to the toll booth. You will need the litter picker to collect tickets unless the passenger jumps out to collect for you. Don't forget there is a waiting area after each peage where you can easily pull over to get your belts etc sorted. The toll tag is the easiest solution though and if you haven't got a screen, keep it in handy on the passenger seat and simply hold it in place as you approach the barrier - and then smile as other cars try to follow you through without a tag...
