We are currently deciding on what sound deadening/heat insulation to use, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Also has any one tried using this - http://www.lizardskin.com/

Which parts of the car are you wishing to insulate?
There will be a different product for each application.

I used the combo sound / heat proofing on the cockpit ally panels, covered the rails in ally heat may and wrapped the coolant pipes in exhaust wrap. No noticeable heat comes in from the sides now, and no cooling issues wrapping the pipes.

Not sure sound insulation is worth it.

I used Cool-Tec products from Nimbus Motorsports http://www.nimbusmotorsport.com/ Good stuff and excellent service.

I am looking at an Aerogel insulation. Seems to be still quite difficult to find (at least at an affordable price), since it is new on the market. I have only found the Aerorock from Rockwool, which is used for house renovation. It only comes in a combo with the plaster board (which would need to be stripped).

I thought this might give significant weight advantages or better insulation. Typically the Rockwool products are rated for upto 1000°C, but installing this will be messy...

Any thoughts on Aerogels?

Best regards

On my metal radiator tubes I used some Class-O split lagging... I can't find the link at the min, but any good plumbing / heating store will carry it. It's about an inch thick. It's done a great job of stopping the heat coming into the footwell areas so far smile

All my ally panels around the cockpit, inside all the double skin areas (inc floor and the additional bulkhead plate I made for the front bulkhead), I used FatMat Extreme Sound Deadening.

On the engine facing sides of the fuel tanks, bulkheads front and rear, airbox, under clamshell and a few other areas I've lined it all with DEI Reflect-a-Gold. Be warned this stuff is addictive and expensive!!

See pics on my site for where I've applied all these products: www.facebook.com/ultima.can.am.build

The factory still contents sound proofing is not required. They state you can have a conversation at 100mph without any issues. Has anyone done a comparison test?

I'm getting close to paneling.confused

thanks in advance for any insight

I must say I did install sound deadenning in my first car not in the second, I was not convinced of the results, since there is more noise coming
from other areas, so I would say the factory is correct that is not really worth considering.

Perhaps not necessary for sound (the vehicle is loud with or without), but insulation for heat insulation definitely!

Thanks for the feed back, always helpfully. Heat propagation is a concern. I owned a Pantera, and even with AC full on (which is not saying much) the cockpit/floor was toasty.

cheers

I just wear Sony active noise canceling ear buds and a small boom mic (if I need to answer the phone! - yes, heresy I know) when I drive the car. I haven't rigged up a second set with an intercom but I will and it is surely far better results than sound deadening will ever provide. The headphones have a 'monitoring' button which I engage allowing me to hear car and street (and even radio) noises but just damps out much of the cockpit/wind/tire/road/engine sounds.
Questionably legal here in CA but I am not using it to listen to the radio, it does provide 'hands free' driving if that was in question and is not nearly as obvious as an ANR headset. They are really marvelous.
With all of the holes in the tub panels where the frame passes in and out, the desired low weight and the fundamentally loud design of the car, trying to deaden it is not likely to yield interesting results.

I can certainly testify that well chosen / placed sound & heat proofing does work in an Ultima. Verses a friend's Ultima, with the deadening I added, my car is quieter (e.g stone clatter under the floor is noticeably muted) and it suffers less heat soak into the cabin. It's not perfect, there's a few bits to improve on, but it's been a good exercise.

I have used earbuds with my Ariel Atom and really didn't like the isolation they gave - too much external noise blocked out and I even (nearly) missed the odd car sneaking up on me!

If you're building from scratch, some well judged heat / sound deadening is very much worthwhile, IMO.
