Good 2nd mountain bike? Cannondale trail perhaps? Under £700

Going to get back onto MTB but haven't done for a while.

We have mainly dry and sandstone trails so a little rough, I'm thinking a hard tail but it's been 15 years since I rode offroad so would appreciate any recommendations.

Should I even consider 2nd hand or just go new?

Depending on where you are, if not too hilly, why not go for the leftfield choice of a singlespeed, that way better frame as there is no budget being spent on shifters and derailleurs. Cannondale do a trail singlespeed, got one myself love it, £600 new, there is also one from Charge at a similar price and Genesis.
