I hope someone can assist me with a " buzzing " sound on a MX-5. It starts at about 2500rpm and lasts to approx 3000rpm. If you hold the gearlever over to the N/S the noise stops. Any thoughts appreciated.

Could be the nylon cup at the base of the gear lever is worn. It's an easy enough fix if it is that.

It may potentially be the heat shield on the cat.

That's what I'd suggest.

How would holding the gear lever affect the heat shield?

It might stop various things vibrating.

That said, there is a good chance that the upper & lower boots are shot and there is no oil in the turret so replacing those and the nylon cup would be a good idea. I've just never heard of that causing a rattle and not sure how that would happen as however loose the cup might be, it's buried beneath a gearstick in a gearbox turret and it's only a small nylon thing.

My Gear nob buzzes at high revs, 6000+. Handy shift indicator smile. The grub screws holding it on work loose.

Heat shield is the most likely thing in that rev range but don't see how the gear stick would affect it.
