I guess the truth of the matter is, these cars just aren't THAT quick any more. Modern stuff like a 335 can be driven very quickly with very little effort, especially if they are auto. Best to enjoy the sense of occasion as opposed to trying to out drag high powered euro boxes.
That being said, it doesn't sound like yours is running right, so you might be able to demand a re-match when sorted!

If you have a Chimaera that's slower than a BMW diseasil then something is clearly wrong. If it's a chipped up diseasil beemer and you have a 400 then your dilemma is understandable. Although not acceptable. Any German saloon car should not be quicker than a TVR. Just my personal opinion... I can't abide the thought that a TVR is left behind by a German barge. It's just not right.

Ran out of puff about 4200 rpm. ?camshaft worn. It's done 60000 miles.
Mine (rebuilt) revs and pulls freely to the 6250rpm limiter. If your car is running flat beyond 4200rpm+ you may well be right about the camshaft. A BMW 335 should not be outdragging a healthy Chim 450 through the gears unless something is wrong. The 335's and 535's are all auto; at least the diesel derivatives are. They are fast cars, especially if remapped. some of the 335i's have been remapped to 390bhp, whilst the 535d's up to 370bhp/730nm (gearbox limits). However, power to weight ratio will nearly always win, so a healthy 450/ 500 should out drag. However, it's as you get 100mph+ the balance changes. Once you get past these speeds, it's either your pride or your license if you're driving in the UK.
I managed to keep up with a new M3 several weeks back. I eventually backed-off as the Chim was getting very light and the road was new to me. I think a lot has to do with what gear you are in.

Up to about 60ish I had him but beyond is where he pulled away. It was fairly close after but I was suprised by the lack of grunt after 4K. Having said that the car is due a major service. I'll try it again after that! Nontheless it's great to be back in a tvr after 2 years of MGB driving, which although good fun doesnt quite provide the same level of excitement!
I can see someone falling into the "mods" trap and joining the "MCC"
The thing with those BMW's is they have very little turbo lag so they have loads of torque from low down, then its long gears with fast auto shifting.
But you should be able to keep up till about 70-80 leptons. I have a 400 and upset a carerra 4s
the other day, cos he could not pull away from me, but he stopped at 75 thankfully.
so 4.5 should be more than a match. maybe cam or just a good service is needed.

The lack of guts over 4200 describes exactly what used to happen in my Griffith until I changed the cam.
I'd check for cheaper alternatives for a cure first but with that mileage I'd suggest your first diagnosis is near the mark. You can check by removing the rocker covers and visually checking the lift, on mine it was apparent.
