Have a listen to a band called Archive. An English collective, huge in Europe but not very well known in UK (yet). Been going since the trip hop years in the 90's and have gradually become more progressive rock/electronic. Difficult to categorise as their music is so diverse, but they have written some of the most beautiful songs I've heard, whilst also being able to really give it some. One of the best bands I've ever seen live (have travelled to Paris to see them twice)

Standout song for me is 'Again' (must have posted the live video from Eurockeenes on here hundreds of times over the last few years). Try listening to the latest album "With Us Until You're Dead" or either of the Controlling Crowds albums.

A few links to some of their best stuff:

Bullets: http://youtu.be/V6nbFZtxAL4

Again (live in Lyon): http://youtu.be/0kdDNz27P4I

Lights (live in Athens): http://youtu.be/hwFvDlqw_LI

Wiped Out: http://youtu.be/Ao8O7TWQVsU

...and the obligatory Eurockeenes video: http://youtu.be/7ZTjzPPGAQM

Can you tell I'm a bit of a fan? biggrin

Recently I have been enjoying the work of:
The Joy Formidable
Public Service Broadcasting
On a heavier but no less melodic tangent, F%$#ed Up. Far far better than the angry 6th form punk band name would suggest.

I can't possibly list my top 10. I have 8000 tracks in my collection and what I enjoy most changes like the weather.

So I'm going to tell you things that I think are different and interesting and occasionally fun.

Open the doors of perception, and check out these albums:

Blasted Mechanism: Mind At Large
Tesseract: Altered State
Noidz: The Great Escape
Burial: Kindred EP
Qntal: Qntal IV: Ozymandias
Pitch Black: Rude Mechanicals
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Murder Ballads
Public Service Broadcasting: Inform - Educate - Entertain

I don't have an all time top ten, but have been spending rather too much time listening - nay discovering - the oevre that is The Small Faces. Keep coming back to it too - if you like early Who stuff, Kinks etc then you'll be well at home.

Massively under-rated IMHO.

Also have a big thing for Squeeze - sadly faded from frontline UK music scene, but for good poppy storytelling songs they really were ace. (Somebody will be along shortly to tell me about a sell out tour happening right now)

At the other end of the scale, do you Rundgren? Todd has covered most bases, from Beatle's homage to stadium rock.

If you fancy a live show, see George Thorogood in London next week. Raw slide guitar blues based R & B (think 'Bad to the Bone') is even better in the flesh.

Just based on recent tracks I've played/scrobbled to last.fm I'd suggest having a listen to some Frank Turner.

If I fancy something new I tend to go to WE7 (now Blinkbox Music) and either search for an artist I like to see what similar artists it recommends or pick one the existing stations. Always tends to throw up some new stuff I've not heard before.

Don't know if you'll be a fan or not but I'm currently hooked on Deaf Havana and Death Cab for Cutie.
Might be worth a look if you like that sort of music.
