Are you a dealer? Why did you ask which car he was calling about? I never mention the make or model when I phone a private seller about a car for that very reason. Why didn't you just ask him to come round and take a look and he can negotiate after seeing the car?
Because then he knows where you live and, as is usually the point of these type of calls will be late for the assigned appointment by a few days and a night.Friend of mine lost his motorbike like that.

I am not a dealer, just a private owner trying to sell his car without too much fuss. I asked him which car he was interested in because he was so vague when I spoke to him. I got the impression that he makes these sort of calls all day looking for prey.
Looks like a bargain. Same age as mine, but higher spec (sunroof). Got the same essential air + heated seats I wanted when I bought, and also the steering wheel controls (which I didn't want, but really miss now when I swap to my 996 turbo).
Mileage is higher than mine, but when I was looking (only 6 months ago) I didn't see a single 4.5S with air at that price, even with similar mileage. Air seemed to make a big difference - any 4.5s I saw that started with a 6 in the price were non-air.
Good luck with the sale - I think it will go quickly.

sandman has a valid point
if you (seller) ask which car are you asking about it rings immediate alarm bells and i would ask the exact same question as the caller, then probably run away on principle.
if you are a private seller why would you not be sure?
if you were a dealer - why are you pretending to be a private sale? the answer is usually as there is a business benefit in the buyer having no come back, especially if they've just filled the gearbox with sawdust for the test drive etc....
take the point that it may have been a time waster, but remember a sharp private buyer will be deliberately vague about the car to test you are not a dodgy arthur daley etc.

Hello mate. What's the lowest you'd take for your car? Cash today?
Which car are you phoning about?
Err... What car are you selling?
I don't get the point of these calls.
Selling privately is such a pain. Which car are you phoning about?

When I was asked 'what's the lowest you'd take for your car', my response was 'the highest you're willing to pay'. Such questions are a waste of time as a negotiation tactic for a vehicle that is unseen so are deserving of that sort of reply.

Good grief, are they really that cheap!? Saw a ford c-max that wasn't much cheaper than that yesterday! Wish I could convince Mrs.NCoT to get something bigger!
It has had a replacement secondhand engine, presumably it had the standard bore-related problem?NiceCupOfTea said:
Don't know anything about Cayennes - wouldn't that be a selling point then?
If it were a new factory replacement engine, yes. But unless I have misread the advert, it apesrs to be an engine that had covered 71,000 miles when it was fitted...but if I have misread it, my apologies.At the last service (120,000 miles) the mechanic noticed metal in the
Oil filter. When we had it borescoped we found that one of the rings
had started to break up which scored the cylinder. The mechanic
(Ex Porsche head technician) recommended a replacement engine which
is exactly what we did about 2,000 miles ago. It's running beautifully
on the new engine. Typical bad luck just before I intended to sell it!

Hell's teeth that's a bargain, I didn't realise they'd dropped to that. Off to boot up the man maths calculator!
(Soxboy's trademarked Man Maths Calculator works on the basis of:
X = Purchase Price
N = Number of Months owned x £250
M = Maintenance costs + RFL
S = Sale price
so, if X-(N+M)>S = Win)

Had plenty of this when selling the Cayman R on here, but it is no different where ever you advertise and mention no tyre kickers etc. I had two odd emails, one asking when he can send his mate around to do a full inspection, to which I replied I was unwilling to allow anyone but Porsche to carry out an inspection on such an expensive car (can imagine someone turning up with tools and pulling it part) and the other was the classic "I want your car but can't come and see it in person so will have it collected by a transport company, are you ok with payment via Paypal"...that individual didn't even get a reply!
It does scare you off from selling a car privately, but fortunately one decent buyer came along and bought it there and then.
