Track day noise
Discussion
Hi guys, I've searched the forum for tis but couldn't find it, although its bound to be there somewhere.
Catey is an R500 Duratec, with track day carbon air box, and what looks like a S.S. repackable scilencer about 150mm diameter and 520mm long. She's done around 3600 miles and is 3 / 4 years old.
If I repack this will it get through noise at places like Donnington or should I be looking for a different scilencer?
I am currently having to wear an earplug in my right ear on the road.
Has anyone bought an effective 'reasonably priced' decibel meter that they can reccomend!
Cheers Jason

Hi Catey, on the standard exhaust at around 4.5k revs you are probably looking at 101 or more dB(A) on the usual test. They are not quiet things, and the induction is also a bugger for setting off drive-by.
To be honest, this is my only issue with my car, and I plan to get a longer exhaust (most likely a Raceco) to try and bring the static down below 100 dB(A). For the induction, as Teflon says lifting off near the noise meters will help.
I do have a noise meter buried in the garage somewhere, but as the conditions of the test will vary based on location, if it is at all possible it is better to get over to the track you plan to use and get them to test it for you. Most circuits will do that for free provided there is an event already on that day.

There are good free noise meter apps for Iphones and smart phones they are within 1 dB of a certified meter so can give you an idea of the noise level of your current set up . Always a good idea to be able to repack at the circuit if needed to meet a lower limit so some spare media and tools is a good shout too.
The levels for a cat 7 vary too much to even give a rough guide but Im one of the noise testers at a circuit so if you need more please ask .

Donny is more of a problem on induction from my experience however last time I was there a few years ago after getting the black flag I found shortshifting coming onto the pit straight helped me to avoid an early bath , I have a large raceco exhaust on my car that has been repacked recently and at Croft last week I was measured static at 93db @ 5,000 rpm .
Also for Donington, stay well over to the right as you pass the pit wall to avoid trigging the meter if you are on the noise limit - which is a bit of a pain as you are usually trying to pass the other slower cars there who wonder why you tuck right in behind them as they move right to let you pass...
We have got an invite to a noisy TD at Donington in July in which case it won't matter how much noise you make
If you want the details just drop me a line

While we're on this topic, anyone have any idea how much noise a Sigma produces?
Mine's a 140 "Supersport" spec Roadsport, has the normal exhaust and not the peashooter type. I'm off to Anglesea on the weekend and am just guessing noise levels (It's a Javelin trackday and has a 105db static and 95db driveby limit). I can't see me having any problems, but I'm just curious as to what other Sigma owners have had their cars measured at?

Thanks again guys, reall helpful.
Teflon T, could you elaborate a little on what I need to access the rev limiter ie leads software etc? - thanks
Also, I think I will look at the bigger silencers recommended, I'd hate to get my day ruined for my inability to 'lift' when out there.

I have a CSR (2.3 Duratec) that was hitting 102.5 db on a static noise test on a standard exhaust. After fitting a RaceCo exhaust (the largest one that would fit - no space for a Catalyst), the noise came down to 92.5 db. I have run the car at Bedford Autodrome, which is very strict on noise, with no issues.Teflon T, could you elaborate a little on what I need to access the rev limiter ie leads software etc? - thanks

I have to repack the exhaust after 4-5 trackdays to keep the noise down.
Hope this helps?

Utterly daft idea. If you are going to reduce the limiter for the test and then increase it after (forgive me if I have mis-understood), then just lie to the noise man. You are no less morally bankrupt. Teflon T, could you elaborate a little on what I need to access the rev limiter ie leads software etc? - thanks

You can also go home at night knowing you've done your bit to totally and utterly f**k the motorsport industry in the UK.

Hi guys,
I've already done my homework and the ball is rolling on the Raceco, although I prefer the look of the shorter one and that's the one opted for -purely on aesthetics - hopefully it will bring me under the limit.
Repacking tip taken on board!
That said, it doesn't stop me wanting to learn more about the car and with a perqulier staring trend I'd like to look at the map if possible. Also just out of interest. Moral high ground reduced here I hope Bert? ; )
She NEVER starts first time, I can crank her from two seconds through to ten, an 9/10 times she will start instantly with a second push of the button - unless someone is watching then its third or forth.
If at the local Shell station, just topped up with lashings of Optimax, a crowded forecourt and people queing behind, she will taunt me until, the cranking speed is slowing down as the battery weakens, the with a little laugh she bursts into life!
