Storing generator fuel

How do you guys store petrol for your generators? My Kipor has a 3.7l capacity and I have a 10l can... do you tend to fill a can and keep the excess in the boot of the car for instance, or is it a bad idea to have more than a generator tank's worth at a time?

I've got a 20 litre can that I'll fill on the way down and keep in the gazebo - I'd rather the fumes were vented to open air than get in the car and have to breathe it for days.

A partially full container of fuel is more dangerous than a completely full one (the fumes are the flammable bit). Try to keep it outside, rather than in the boot of a car
