Hi,

All in the title really. My old PS3 has died and i have a repleacement, the old one will no longer work at all, it is one of the oldest models so i have removed the hard drive from the bottom but is there any way i can retreive the old save game data and wipe any remaining data off it? I don't really fancy repeating the last 3 years worth of GT5.

I fixed my old 60gb model when this happened by putting the motherboard on a low heat in the oven for 15 mins. Put her back together and so far had another two years out of her.

Could be worth a shot as you have a replacement anyway.

The unit is very easy to take apart.

What sort of heat would you suggest?

As Dan says it might be worth trying to fix it. Even if it only works for a day it'll allow you to get your stuff off it. Either using an oven or hot air gun carefully can work, plenty of guides on the internet and Youtube.

The Disc in a PS3 is encrypted and only usable on the same PS3 without wiping it so that's the only way to recover it I'm afraid

I put my motherboard on a tin tray at 150 degrees celcius for 15 minutes.

What's funny is I fixed it so I wouldn't have to start GT5 again! Now I don't play it anymore.

I did this, but used a plumbing blow torch instead of a hairdryer.

Worked for a couple of hours afterwards.

It might have worked longer if I'd been a bit braver with the blow torch, but it wasn't my PS3 so didn't want to be too enthusiastic! smile

Rescued my old one with a blow torch too, then sold it to a mate on the provision that it 'might' fail so it went very cheap.

Fecking thing is still going strong.

Make sure to get the heatsink compound from a PC store and replace the stuff after you've wiped the old excess off, as otherwise it'll overheat very quickly. It's expensive and usually comes in a little syringe type applicator. It's pretty important.

A Hairdryer is nowhere near hot enough, worth a go with a hot air gun or the oven IMO

If you're near Harrogate you would be welcome to borrow my hot air gun.

Check out Gilksy's vids, also supplied me with all the thermal bits I needed and tons of useful advice on reflowing the board, a really good guy who knows his stuff.

Does it matter that his video says YLOD fix?

Off topic, but what on earth made someone think "Oh FFS, my PS3 is broken - I know, I'll put it in the oven for a bit" ?

Well the problem is with poor soldering, which sorts itself out in the oven.

Apparently it's the same thing as the yellow light flashes then goes red, (caused by the dry joint problem which the reflow fixes), there's tons of really informative vids on his site, might be worth checking a few for more info, good luck!
