Ok, so not two of the most interesting or exotic cars ever to have graced the grass (mud?) of Le Mans, but in something of a conundrum after my brother-in-law unexpectedly had delivered an Insignia after smashing up his Scirocco when he was expecting a Golf or something of that ilk.

Plan prior to this was to go in my car as it would be more roomy and comfortable for the 3 of us travelling, but I think an Insignia would tick this box too, plus, in all probability will also be:
  • more economical
  • more reliable (not that I doubt the reliability of the E39, but it is 11 years old after all...)
  • 4WD - handy if things get a bit muddy
  • not my tyres/interior to worry about ruining
All that said, I'm a little sad about not taking mine, as was quite looking forward to wafting my way down in luxury listening to the V8 quietly burbling away. An Insignia seems a bit dull by comparison.

What would you do?

The weekend is about enjoyment and do what will make you happiest - and that is the 540.

You were planning to take it anyway, do not allow the spectre of puritanical thriftyness to de-rail your destiny!

For quite a while I /really/ wanted an E39 540i. Never got one in the end and right now I have no car.

Therefore, please take the 540i, at least just do it for me?!

I took my black 540 a couple of years ago. Didnt cost all that much in petrol and was much more fun than a standard car. We also broke the land speed record from cheshire to dover, 3 hours 15 mins non stop. Sold it the following year and I really regret it!
Take the 540!

Appreciate the feedback thus far, and wholeheartedly agree with all of you... keep the votes coming - the more the better to sway any doubting passengers that there should be any other option! smile

I really dislike the Insignia, nasty interior and hateful unrefined 4-cyl diesel. Take the E39 thumbup

They are passengers and therefore have no say! It's your car your choice wink

It's the kind of journey that kind of car is made for. Just take it.

Haha! Would agree only they have kind of paid for the Eurotunnel ticket, so...

Absolutely agree that it is made for this type of journey though and have been looking forward to doing it in it for some time!

Simple answer take the E39, the weekend is all about fun and I doubt you'll have much of that in an Insignia!

Well apart from all the other reasons, just think of it like this.

You can go to Le Mans with a ditchwater-dull hire car.

Or you can take your wonderful V8-powered pride and joy, drive it across France and get photos of it sitting on a campsite surrounded by glorious metal, at the greatest motor race in history.

Looking like this.

That's not even a decision at all, do it and love it driving

I was thinking the same thing. Whoever voted Insignia needs to hand in their PH membership on the way out nono
