Long time lurker here. Slight change in work pressures means I've got more free time than ever, so I thought I'd do something constructive and train for long distance triathlons. My coach reckons I need at least a year before looking at the full IronMan events (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run)in 2014.
I've never been super-fit but I'm up for the challenge. Any other PHers taken up the IM challenge ... or would like to? Shorter events planned for this year?

There is at least one mental enough to go for the full Ironman. Myself I am hoping for a sprint in September but waiting to see how my ankle injury heals.

Ill stick to duathlons and ultras thanks, bloody swimming with elbows and feet to my face doesn't appeal! Good luck though mate, it's a lot of time commitment for the task

Hmm - I am on the verge of committing to this distance event.

Need to think it over

2015 or 2016 for an Ironman for me I think. Loved my first sprint tri and will work through the distances between then.

If you've not done so, give Andy Holgate's two books a read, especially the first - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cant-Swim-Ride-Run-Triathl...

If you're committed, it's 9months from beginner to being able to finish an Ironman from chatting to a coach. A good coach will be worth his/her weight in gold so worth considering.

Yes Rico, read the first IronHolgs book. He got good times for a big bloke with wonky knees.
The Don Fink "IronFit" book is really good and has three versions of a 30 week plan that I hope to start next Feb for IM Wales. I do have a coach lined up too.
Got an Oly and mabe a Middle this Sept. I'm sat in today, idling at the PC, waiting for my new Felt racing bike to be delivered smile

Am aware of Ironholgs from Runnersworld tri forum. Been a fan of the pirates for a while...

I did IM France last year (2012), absolutely loved it, awesome experience. My training was based simply around completing within the 16 hr cutoff rather than breaking any records or going for a Kona slot. I averaged 10-12 hours total training per week over the 12 months prior to the event. Anyone with a base level of fitness and reasonable swimming ability could train to finish an ironman in as little as six months. If however you are looking to go sub 12-13hours then that is a completely different kettle of fish.

Do it, you wont regret it.

Going long myself this year. Did London Olympic last year which kicked off my interest having just been a runner the few years before. Only two weeks to go now before IMUK.

Also done a couple of smaller triathlons, and a half iron distance this year too.

Got a blog up here if you are interested. thomaswhatley.blogspot.com
