Tried to change the oil on the girlfriends 147 1.6 at the weekend. Couldn't shift the sump plug. It appears to require a 8mm allen key, after applying more force than I would have liked it still wouldn't shift.

Can anyone confirm whether this is an Allen key or Star key fit. Do Alfa drop the oil this way or pump it out. The plug appears never to have been moved despite the car having been dealer serviced and the oil changed before.

Any thoughts/advice greatfully recieved.

Be careful!
I think it is a RIBE head, and not an allen head.
An 8mm allen key will fit I think, but the sump threads are very easy to strip so I wouldn't risk it unless you are absolutely sure.
Go here, (or any other Draper stockists)
http://webshop.keyind.co.uk
and search on RIBE.

Cheers guys, have borrowed an ingenious pump device, where you stuff a pipe down the dipstick to the bottom of the sump and just suck it all out. No mess, no hassle. the sump plug can stay where it is!

its an alan key fitting, you need a long bar to jerk
the plug loose,do not overtight when putting back the plug+dont loose the washer!!!! dispose of the old oil with care,(its a big fine if you dont)i have a new sucker machine with all the fittings...but still like to see all the oil drain out the sump....
the common sump that fits all the 145/146/147/155
156/gtv/spider 1600/1800/2000 has a very weak sump
thread, and we have used loads of thread inserts to
repair them in situ, the best insert is made by wurth. be carefull or your girl will not love anymore if you bust her sump plug!
