Hi guys,

I think I need help, but I'm a bit afraid to go to the doctors as I don't want to admit I have a problem.

What I'm struggling with is the ability to do certain things without feeling sick or the feeling of passing out. I wouldn't say I'm a shy person, sit me in a pub and I can have a chat with anyone, but I find in some situation, I just need to get out or stop whats happening. A couple of examples as follow.

A while ago I went to the cinema to see a film with a bunch of friends. It was the last of the Paranormal Film, I've seen the others before and was fine, however this time I was with a group of friends and I hadn't before. After about 15 mins into the film, I was sweating, yawning a lot, feeling very hot and as though I wanted to be sick. This is the crazy bit, but it all started from I think my friends breath, which at the time was pretty potent. My issue is, thats all it takes and my mind for some reason takes over and I start to feeling like I want to be sick. After another 10 mins of coming close to or feeling like I was going to throw up, I had to get up and leave. Almost immediately I felt better. I walked out and sat in the bar area and was fine. Drank some water and I was still pretty sweaty, after about 10 mins my friend came out, checked I was alright and I made my excuses and left. Never did see that film.

The last example is today. My friend has been asked to take his plane up and calibrate an instrument on it. It requires two hours flying constantly, nothing to traumatic. I've been up before, the last time was in his DH Chipmunk which only when he threw it around a bit did I start to feel a little ill. However just walking across the tarmac to the plane I started to feel like I didn't want to do this. I sat in the plane and said straight up that I wasn't feeling so great and that I wouldn't want to ruin his flight by either throwing up or making him turn back. He said, just see how I feel once we're up there, was very reassuring, but by the time we taxied to the runway I just wanted out. Luckily the airport was technically shut so I was able to get out of the plane and walk back on the verge. But again, almost instantly I felt so much better and silly for not going through with it.

I know it is all mind over matter, and I've told myself I need to talk about it, but even tonight as I was there I couldn't talk my way past it. So I'm now looking for anyone else with a similar problem and how they got through it. Any tips or tricks as I'm starting to lose my ability to do things.

I'm afraid I don't have any tips for getting over anxiety however, I started having such problems when I was eighteen and was offered counselling. I turned it down because I thought that it was just for pcensoredsies. Twelve years on and I'm feeling worse than ever. I've been on holiday once in that time, never been on a date, only managed to spend time with friends outside of work four or five times last year and my work is now being badly affected too. I've recently accepted counselling out of desperation more than anything, although it hasn't started yet. I'm still not convinced there's not a physical problem driving it, but if I'd accepted counselling at the beginning, I might not be where I am now having wasted most of my adult life so far. I'm not asking for anyone's sympathy, I just don't want anyone to make the same mistake. It seems to be something that people don't talk about much, but when I have done with friends individually, they have had it themselves or at least think it'd be a good idea.

It's nothing to be ashamed of and better to do it now than let your problems get any worse. The further you sink, the harder it is to escape its grasp. I hope you manage to.

Above post is very true.
If you let your health go that way it can really spiral and destroy your life.
For me the only way to stop anxiety is avoidance and that's obviously not a proper solution.
Good luck with recovery.

You can self refer to a lot of the talk therapists

CBT is a very well recognised form of talk therapy with quite a bit of research backing efficacy. You can find local accredited therapists at http://www.cbtregisteruk.com/Default.aspx

Mindfulness therapy and EMDR may also help but they're less commonly available.

Also consider trying
Cutting back on caffeine and alcohol - both can cause/raise anxiety
Getting enough sleep - sleep deprivation raises cortisol
Taking magnesium supplements - even mild mg deficiency can be linked to anxiety - alcohol consumption and high blood sugars can cause mg depletion

Try 'the linden method' by Charles Linder.

The centrepoint for me was 'distraction' when you find yourself focussing abnormally on something

The whole point is not whether we like the exhaust loud, its the fact that other people are forced to listen to it and dont like it.

Most Bikers on here, myself included, probably love the sound of a good rumbly V twin or the howl of a V4 on WOT from time to time, and its quite nice when you hear them at the track or maybe if you are riding it.

BUT... other people dont like it. They dont want to listen to a loud bike and they shouldnt have to.
It's worse than people who have music on full blast with all the windows down driving round city centres, and we all know how much people hate them.
We are the 0.01% and just becsause we like noise shouldnt mean others have to put up with it, it is selfish.

Most exhausts, baffles in are much more tolerable.

Induction/Mechanical noise is the connoisseurs choice, echaust noise is for louts.

Sorry dont know how that happened, posted in the wrong place. #

On topic, go to your GP, give propanalol (a beta blocker) a try. They wont give you benzos nowadays and they shouldn't they are a quick fix and very addictive.

Drugs will just mask the problem, get a referral to a decent counsellor. They should be able to give you some coping strategies, then you will be able to think to yourself, "ok, this is me, I get worried in this situation, but I can do this and it will be ok".

Beta blockers will reduce the autonmic symptoms such as tachycardia, sweating, palpatations etc. thus they help people gain control and calm down enough for rational thougth over the situation causing their anxiety and can allow them to cope much better.

Don't get me wrong psychological interventions are just as effective if not more so but drugs are more than just a mask.
