For what it's worth I understand Garlicks reason for closing the thread.
I would like to say however that it wasn't my intention to close it down when I reported a certain post, the thread has been running a long time and has allowed a good cross section of opinions to be debated. Shame.

I too was surprised when I took a look this evening and saw it was closed. The last few pages went way off beam as far as I can see despite various mod interventions, I think from Bill, JAYB and maybe others.

Disappointing imo, but as you say, understandable, at least for a while. Maybe an unlock or new thread in calmer times?Generally today has been fairly bad-tempered in quite a lot of the threads I have read, maybe it's the sudden shock of some sunshine and heat that's got the blood boiling?

Agreed, but I think Tonker summed the dilemma up precisely. If this was a forum under your management, what would/could you have done otherwise, whether you really wanted to or not?

Unfortunately a skillful operator will kill a thread by inflaming comments, so that not just he faces sanctions, but the debate gets shut. I hope not permanently.

Chaps. The cause of the issue is gone and we're working out how to go forwards. The management are busy with LM so don't expect a decision until after the weekend.

The bumped thread will remain open for now.
