Thinking of buying an auction DB9
Discussion
Thinking of buying an auction DB9 with 44k miles. Last service was 2011 however. I'm hoping it has sat unused in that time on the basis it is being auctioned off. What are your thoughts on value in terms of bidding?
Interior is dark blue and there are a few Knicks on it. I appreciate a lot of people on the forum would look to buy a perfectly pristine DB9 but I have to be realistic in that I work in Mayfair and drive a lot so I am inevitably going to get some Knicks and scrapes on the car, hence I am looking for value as much as condition.
Any thoughts welcome. Thanks. Jag

When you ask the value of a car on here it usually develops into an interesting discussion!
I bought a 42k 2007 car from Stratstone with AM dealer 24 month warranty for £42k.
In Autotrader people will ask similar money for a private sale 2004! Go figure.
They will be auctioning it for a reason on assumes, it does not have a current service history.
Re dings etc AMs generally have good paint / finish so putting it right need not cost thousands, but equally it wont be £100 at the local body shop.
£25k? You cant drive it or get it looked at before so the risk is relatively high I would imagine. Blue interior is better than Iron Ore, but also probably not a selling point per se. We hired one before buying with a blue interior and there was nothing wrong with it, but it was not great either.
Good luck

I would be very cautious. Is it possible to take someone with you who knows about Astons who can give it a look over. If it is a "proper" car ; what is it doing in an auction? I honestly think this is a case of BUYER BEWARE! Why not wait until a purchase can be made from a main dealer with a proper warranty. The answer is not to go to the auction. Sorry to knock your enthusiasm!!
If it was any good the previous owner could have sold it to many Aston dealers - official AM and specialists. Blue interior will put a lot of people off- black is preferred (Yeti - no need to comment
).
no service history for 18-24 months would worry me - why has the car not been loved / looked after.

Without wishing to be argumentative, I have picked up some real bargains at auction. It is a 9 year old car so a missing service may not be a killer here if the mileage is less than 10,000 since it's last one. The car maybe a repossession or some other valid reason, but yes as we all know some auctions are just a place to get rid of a dog.
Obviously it is difficult to drive and listen to the car to ensure that it is not buggered, but generally you have until the end of the day to report any major discrepancies in it's description. i.e. if it is described as a runner and subsequently it is not. I do however agree BUYER BEWARE. I would not pay more than £25K either, that way if anything is wrong you stand a chance of getting it sorted, if not you have a bargain. The problem with risky strategies is that you will come out a loser on some and a winner on others
. Nature of the game

, well that is until I visit your bank

I've also heard stories of Astons with half-arsed crash repair, making them look OK, but would be dangerous in a crash.
Apparently it's easy to see when the car is on a lift, if you know what too look for.
Given that you're not likely to save more than a few grand, 5?, 10?, personally I wouldn't do it. The bills to fix anything major that's wrong with it can be large.
If it makes you feel any better, I bought a pristine V8 for mostly London driving - it's now well well spattered with paint chips and a few minor scratches, but it can all be fixed.

Thanks for your comments guys. It had a years MOT full service. Was only used circa 4k miles in the last year hence now service in the last 12 months. Was good condition. It sold at auction for £31k plus £800 buyers fee which puts it in the realms of buying a private one in a colour combo I really like....
