Respectful that other people might not like your music taste

Do you force your music choices on others?

I listen to a wide variety of music types, but my perference is Rock / Heavy Rock / 'classic' Metal. Bit of Slipknot, Slayer, etc, etc, too.

Now my wifes family circle listen exclusively to country.

So when they're in my car i always turn my stuff off, usually immediately before i get the 'whats that ste you're listening to?' type comments

But yet when i'm in their cars they quite happily keep their country ste on like its 'good' music? Usually on some awful medium wave channel.

Or am i just too considerate?

I am EXACTLY the same i love the heavy stuff like the above to the most mellow of acoustic rock also , how ever when other family members are in the car eg the missus and kids i turn it off and let them have what they want. i have tried to educate them in the power of music that is metal however have failed and like many before me have to gog to gigs to find the same like - mided people and it`s such a lovely community the metal/rock scene

I have divided my music in to three groupings, based on my OH's opinion of it, and copied it on to three USB sticks for the car: friendly, neutral and hostile.

She prefers the former, will tolerate the middle and is never made to listen to the latter.

Also, when I was growing up, my folks would always put classical music on in the car. If I asked if I could put some bad rock on, they'd say "when you have a car of your own, and you are driving us round, you can play your music". I'd kind of forgotten this until this thread reminded me.

So, Dad (who reads PH), how about a nice bit of Norwegian black metal next time we go out?

I will usually put a mainstream radio station on and switch until I find a song which is at least ‘okay’. The problem I have is that firstly most mainstream stuff is crap and secondly the setlists are SO small. Either they are playing a new song 1,000 times a day –or- they play a song that they use to play 1,000 times a day.

Now I don’t mind the 2 new Pharrel tracks (Daft Punk & Robin Thicke) but they are hardly great songs yet get played to death. If I have to hear a fking Labrinth or Tiny Temper song again I may be forced to slit my wrists and Dizzee Rascal and Robbie Williams!? FFS!!!

I like a lot of different genres and will occasionally listen to what I like in the car with my gf but she likes most stuff too. I try and educate her with a bit of old school Blink 182, some new electronic dance music, maybe some Stone Sour etc but if she didn’t like it I’d turn it off.

I don’t have an exclusive genre I’m attached to… I will happily listen to The Saturday’s ft Sean Paul (hey, it’s catchy!) straight onto a bit of Slipknot – Duality.

If I'm in other people's cars I don't care what they listen to (unless it's a super long journey) as I'm just grateful for the lift.

I'm a rap fan primarily but over the years through the appreciation of the original samples I'm happy listening to most things. My dad is a massive jazz/funk fusion fan and my older cousins loved that whole 80's soul/street sound type of music. Most of that is the same stuff that was sampled in the songs I love so if I have an inkling someone will be offended I'll gravitate towards something along those lines as not to offend.

The missus is a reggae fan. Roots, culture, full on dancehall you name it. I quite like that as well as from my clubbing days most clubs tended to play equal amounts reggae and rap.

You all listen to my music without knowing it. A lot. Apologies if needed.

However, I wouldn't dream of telling people what they should listen to by choice.

(Though Handel and J S Bach are the two that I would SERIOUSLY recommend).

Over the years I've grown a real appreciation for classical music and quite often listen to classic FM for some relaxing time in the car. As sad as it sounds one of the most memorable drives was last year after carnival driving along the A4 listening to an interview with John Williams.

I don't make other people listen to my music preference (which is mainly metal) because I don't expect anyone to enjoy it or have to put up with it. I wish others would do the same. When I'm in the works car, if I've got a passenger and they try and turn the radio up, I hold my thumb on the volume down button the steering wheel so I don't have to listen to their ste.

It's worst when you work with someone who won't stop singing, usually badly, in the car, in the office, in the yard, on the bog etc. I wish I had a mute button for these people.

IF I know it's some one who has a ste taste in music i.e someone who classes Justin Beiber as a rock star or gods gift i'll whack some Jam, The Who, Clash or Sex Pistols stuff on just so they can hear proper rock music and as my way of getting people in to decent music. But if it's someone who is pretty open minded I find I get a good response from any Stone Roses or Oasis track. If it's a stranger I don't have music on. Just to build up tension

My car radio only picks up Radio 4 longwave, so that does solve the problem for me. I do keep a CD of bluegrass "chase music" in the car as an alternative though.

Luckily my brother and I have similar tastes, and hes the only one I drive with.

But overall I wont be a dick, if someone isn't a Sabbath fan I wont blast it at them, but I wont apologise for playing it and will defend 'whats that st' remarks.

For the most part, mrs k is the only one to share the car with me and - luckily - she likes a bit of classical (apart from operas; she cannot stand "screechy" sopranos).

Trance stuff is completely out of bounds, as it's "repetitive noise".

Chillout stuff like Groove Armada or Zero 7 is ok when she's in the pax seat, as is electric Blues guitar.

But we're off to Italy in a week's time, and I think I should introduce her to some Floyd and Pearl Jam......

I usually only listen to music in the car alone.

Occasionally, if say we're going on a really long drive, we'll sort out a CD or two each (our cars aren't modern enough to have MP3 input) and tolerate each others choices.

I usually find if I've a passenger, I'm talking to them rather than listening to music. My daughter's still at the age where the radio/CD switches on automatically when she starts the car, but my brain's passed the point where I can cope with her voice and the radio blaring out, it's just an unpleasant experience now (although I recall being exactly the same when I was in my early 20s! )

To be honest, though, I tend to listen to Radio 4 more than music in the car.

Ditto... A bit of Johnny Cash is always worth a listen. Can't think of any metal I feel the same about (although I might be wrong ).
