quick lesson please anyone?
Discussion
I know this wont be a quick lesson.... but am looking to buy an older 911 cab.... carerra 3.2 / carrera supersport? / 964 / 993
I am used to the more modern 911's, and just want to understand the pecking order...(not a free for all mine is better than yours)...just looking for the basics.
Am I right in thinking in terms of desirability / cost the 993 would be at the top, then which - 996/Carrera /Carrera supersport ?
I assume the newer the car, the better the drive/mechanicals ?
I would like something a bit retro - whale fin spoiler, convertible, fuchs alloys - and hopefully a nice drive too..... must be a manual.
So - can anyone simply tell me, given my above list of requirements what I should be searching for please?
I do appreciate the guidance!

Loads to cover there. A quick way of learning the basic differences in appearance is to click google onto images and type in various models. That way you'll learn what wheels came on which car etc.
Main points -
Fuchs wheels stopped with the introduction of the 964 in 1989, so if it "must have" Fuchs then that's as new as you can go (without fitting copy Fuchs designed for newer cars).
The trouble is though the pre-964 cars had older fashioned torsion bar suspension, very "quirky" heating controls, no PAS or ABS and they feel old after jumping out of any modern daily driver. Not necessarily a bad thing but they do feel old.
The whale tail as we know it stopped here too, as far as the Carreras go.
993 = last of the air-cooled (big deal I hear you say. Me too.
) which makes them the final culmination of everything Porsche learnt over the years. This doesn't automatically make them the most desirable model though. Each to their own and I actually prefer 964s.
Only the Turbo and RS had fixed rear wings, the rest had electric retractable ones.
964 = Were the unloved model for years up until recent years. Interest growing now and prices reflecting that. Expensive to run if you like things just right. Servicing a bit more than 993 due to tappets needing manual adjustment unlike the 993s hydraulic ones.
One of my fave cars ever, and I'm sure I'll have another one day. Just buy carefully and have it inspected.
Noise wise a 993 with RSR exhausts on is hard to beat and makes a very different noise even compared to a 964.

Totally agree with most of the comments below, if it was me I would be looking for a 993 cab, varioram car 1995 onwards, with AC, Hardback sports seats.
Its the nearest you will get to a modern car in terms of useability with the character of a classic 911 ( I believe thats why prices are high)
For a low ish ( think sub 80k ) car I imagine your going to pay £25-30K dependent on spec, colour etc
I have had 4 of these now 3 manuals and one tiptronic have to say I prefer the tip ( for day to day driving and feel it suits the cab better) I have other manual fun cars though so it doesn't matter to me as much.
Best idea is drive a few and se what you think, while love the classic 911 / SSE I couldn't go back to driving one as they are too classic for me and don't have AC ( yes I am probably getting old !!)
Phib
I have to admit to being biased as I do have a 993 cab ( that I don't actually want to sell so I am hoping that no one shows up !!) for sale but its a tip so not your cup of tea !!!

it makes a big difference. You could get a nice 930 turbo for 39k or so.
