Hello esteemed PH'ers,

A very quick question. After not owning a console for many years (in fact my last one was a Mega CD) I've decided to get back into a bit of gaming. With the graphics looking amazing and the big launch of the PS4 I was all set to pay my deposit to pre-order.... Then two people, who are reasonably addicted to this sort of thing have said to me just to get a PS3.

Apparently there won't be a huge difference and the games will still be available on the 3 for ages.

Help, who's right?

Roy

I would wait for the ps4, will last a lot longer than a ps3. Unless you desperately want to play Last Of Us, GT6 or GTA5.

You haven't bought a PS3 for the last 6 years its been out and are now thinking of buying one 4-6 months before it gets superseded by something else?

Wait for the PS4.

As above, if you have waited this long, get a PS4.

Why wouldn't you wait at this point, it's a bit like folks who by the IPhone 4S the day before the release of the next one.

Previous model is good but won't last as long as the device coming out 24 hours later.

On the other hand the PS3 can be had for very little money nowadays, there's a tonne of good games going for cheap prices and it's a very good media player and blu-ray player. So why not do both if you can.

This is a good shout as you may find you hate console gaming. Probably better to learn this for a low price than a high price.

There's a lot of sense in getting a PS3:

They're a bargain at £130 or so.
There's endless supply of great games available.
You can get one now, not in 5 months time.

The PS4 will be better in every way, but like every console that has gone before, the first lot of games won't be a million times better than the last lot that came out for the old one. Also Sony have always stated a 10 year lifecycle for the PS3, so whilst it won't be the top dog, it will be 'current' until 2016 or so.

Not to mention that PS4 will be somewhat limited without backward compatibility.

The PS3 has a massive catalogue of excellent games, many of which can be bought very cheaply, not to mention a cheap console in the first place.

PS4 will not do any kind of back-compatibility so it's not like you'll be able to fill in with cheaper, older stuff (including many true classics) while you wait for a decent range of games to come out.

Not to mention that you'll have no gaming for quite a few months until the PS4 drops.

Buy a PS3 now, enjoy the very best that this generation has to offer. That should take you long enough until the first PS4 price drop (at least) and some really good games to come along, not just the £60 launch titles that are rushed out.

If you're anything like me (and you sound like you are), the PS3 is a great bet.
I bought one recently after years without a console. There are hundreds of fantastic, cheap games to work through. I have to say that I mostly use it as a DVD/Netflix player but I enjoy the few games I had, and I haven't spent more than £15 on a game!
I will probably get a PS4 just before it's superseded too wink

For me it's the ideal time to buy. It's cheap but will still be supported for quite some time.

I bought the basic 12GB Super Slim and installed a 320GB hard drive. Altogether that was somewhere in the region of £160, I think.

Im guessing the ps3 will be supported for quite some time, as the psp is still supported even though the vita has come out, I can still get onto the psp 'eshop' thingy that allows you to download full games, still.

I would get a PS3 atm, then a couple of years down the line after you have played all the games you want to on the ps3, get a ps4, rinse and repeat

If you do get a PS3 now be sure to get the infamous games. IMO vastly underrated games and lots of fun, plus the new one on PS4 looks stunning for when you do upgrade. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/413094/six-mi...

Id get a ps3. I got my PS3 in march after years away from "current gen" gaming. I actually got the 12GB free from carphone warehouse with my wifes mobile contract. Dont know if thats an option for you if your not fussed about having a top of the line phone? Stuck in an old hard drive i had lying around and haven't paid more than 10 quid for a game. I'm also still playing on a CRT telly via Svideo [rgb would make dvds green due to anti piracy apparently] and loving it. I will get a PS4 eventually but I'm going to hold off for a bit to let them get any niggles sorted first (memories of my PS2!)

Yep agree with the above.

My PS3 gets a real hammering from being used for lovefilm and streaming movies from my PC to the Telly. As a gaming console it provides enough to keep us all busy when it's cold & raining outside. If you intend to use it for bluray, then I'd invest in the PS3 DVD controller remote as it makes life much easier.

I usually find that second hand games on fleabay are the best way to a bargain. Titles which cost £45 on release can be found for a few quid a year or two later, I recently got a couple of the "dirt" titles for less than a tenner and COD MW 3 for a few sovs, delivered. FIFA and Tiger Woods golf titles offer excellent value, less than £2 in some cases.

Yes very much so. Years back I gave up using the PS2 for DVD's as I'd end up going back to the start when I wanted to pause or whatever.
I picked up the PS3 DVD controller for just £3 in Game (I was surprised as usually they are more expensive than my local independent).
