When do you know when your tyres are worn?

Now, most people say you'll just start getting punctures quite frequently but I'd be more than happy to just replace them that bit earlier so I don't get any punctures (or less likely!)

Currently using vredstein fortezza tricomp slick tyres and not sure how to tell of they're worn or not really! I should probably keep a better log of the mileage I do and when I changed them.

I'm less than 9 stone so I'm guessing not too harsh on tyres compared to heavier riders....

Any pointers?

Continental tyres have wear indicators (pairs of little dots) to show when they need replacing. I assume other brands are similar.

You'll often be able to see where the middle of the tread had flattened down with wear. A bit is OK, but when it's getting noticeably 'square' then it's time to replace.

This. My rear tyre actually got shoulders.

Got told by my LBS a couple of weeks ago that my rear tyre was starting to go flat around the centre and gain shoulders.

I ignored his "advice", assuming he was trying to flog me some overpriced tyres.

Then I did the L2B, and a few training rides, then I rode to work today - 38 miles. Then 5 miles into the return journey I got my first puncture for several years. In fact, I think it's only my second puncture on my road bike since I bought it in Sept 2008!

Maybe I should've listened! Time for some new tyres soon then...

They square-off.
The wear indicators, errr...indicate.
You puncture a lot more.
