Wow that sounds crap. This is not like listening to Motorhead or AC/DC, and just because something is loud doesn't make it good. This has a flat, compressed-waveform sound, and is awful.

I'm going to say that that clip doesn't do it justice, the current engine sounds much more "punchy" in real life compared to TV...

I like it.

Well, that sounds hopeless. It reminds me of my Henry the Hoover vacuum cleaner with the bag half full of brick dust.

Lack of revs just makes it sound a bit gutless. It's a shame, I was hoping for them to pleasently surprise us in terms of sound but not sure that's going to be the case.

Still, it's better than the original proposal of 4-cyl engines with a 12,000rpm limit.

ETA: Saying that, I was also skeptical when it was first announced F1 was moving on to V8s from V10s, but some of the non rev limited V8s were the best sounding engines the sport has ever had. This one in particular:

I think you've just forgotten what the V10s sounded like

The 10s and 12s have it IMO.

Is that Renault V6 in the link on full chat? Only sounded like half revs?

From outside the car, V10 wins hands down. That video is just aural pornography.

Seem to remember the B.A.R of that year sounding even better than the Ferrari - think I'm about to lose an evening to Youtube...

I'm not sure about the revs, but I suppose in theory they should be quieter due to being more efficient?

I think lots of different engines sound great. I'll hold my judgement until I've heard them by ear myself, but I think the 20,000rpm V10's (2004?) will take some beating for the recent years for engine sounds. But then again, they did have semi-automatic gearboxes and t/c...

To me that sounds like the new engine in the first clip, just a different pitch.

Although I personally consider the sound of these things a trivial by-product, the new Renault unit makes a breathy, gutless noise. One can only hope that Mercedes and Ferrari efforts might sing a better tune…

honestly, it's hardly rocket science, a 15,000Rpm V6 with a rotary muffler in the exhaust is never going to sound like a V8/10/12 NA engine doing 20,000+ rpm

not a great clip, but the V12 Ferrari engine takes some beating

The first 20 seconds of this clip is all you need to make you very sad. Thanks Max Mosley
