Just though i would share my real BAD LUCK!!!
I brought my Porsche 911 (996) in feb with full service history, was so chuffed as this is my first
It was on 103k and was so tidy. Got a major service done by AW motorsports in southbourne (Porsche specialist) at cost of £900.
Due to work never got to drive her much, but aimed to go Breakfast club at Goodwood, which was great. On driving home (and im not heavy footed) got a loud rattle from engine...... stopped instantly and had her recovered!!! got the horrid call to say "IMS had failed
so im now on the hunt for a new engine, or rebuild specialist....
so any links, numbers, or help would be helpful.
Ive done 400 miles in her since i brought it...... gutted! but i will not scrap her, or sell for repairs.
Also my Sat nav system has the common "cant read disc" error, so want to replace the system, any got recommendations on what to fit, still want sat nav tho.

Given your part of the world, have a word with Autofram ref the rebuild, to do the whole thing. Otherwise, if you're happy with AW, they can send the engine away for a rebuild - Autofarm / Hartech would be my first call. I did read on Hartech's site that they were going to be doing exchange engines at some point. Both of these are recognised specialists for engine rebuilds and upgrades.
JMG Porsche are probably worth a shout, really skilled / helpful bunch. The only lot I've dealt with (not for a 996).

yep tried that, actually just reading up on it now, if the cars been stood for a while, which it has, this error is common, but once used goes away eventually.... so ill wait and see.
Hartech def look like the place, im budgeting 5k for the rebuild but im reading they can be more then that.... but theres a lot to do whilst apart to stop other issues so may just do the lot and be safe.

Best to get past the acceptance phase and start planning. If you get it upgraded properly at a specialist like Hartech, you will have a car with a fresh engine that should prove reliable for years to come. It will also add some value to the car, which will at least offset some of the pain.

Right quick update so far....
Price from Hartech.
Engine complete strip, assess, clean & prepare for re-build, re-assemble with all new gaskets/seals (except valve stem oil seals at this stage), strip and clean ancillaries as far as possible in case of debris, re-fit ancillaries, re-fit to car, get running with new fluids & test etc of £3500 plus VAT
Typical options are:
1 New cylinder £600 + VAT
New timing chain set - £222 + VAT
New crank shaft bearing set - £120 + VAT
Overhaul heads (strip, de-coke head & valves, re-lap valves, skim heads & re-assemble with new valve stem oil seals) - £300 + VAT
Re-round cylinders & fit support rings - £80 + VAT per cylinder
Used IMS shaft with new modified bearing kit - £500 + VAT
New piston - £325 + VAT
Been told to budget for 5k plus vat!!
Hope they take credit cards ha!!!

that's rubbish to hear mate, my car has a new engine from Porsche at fifty k and a hartech rebuild at eighty five k. got to remember how great it is on the road mate, keep your chin up!
How much did you hand over for the rebuild.. ? did you also get some kind of warranty?The up side is she should run so smooth when done.

t ball! but now ive got prices im just going to go for it.just got to try and get in from Portsmouth to Bolton..... so i'm now on the search for recovery

Both done before I got the car - a previous owner paid 17.5k for Porsche to fit a new one, later rebuild was by hartech who I believe warranty their work (I think) and was about 6kThe up side is she should run so smooth when done.
Wow, bad news mate, just had a leaking IMS seal diagnosed on mine which means it makes sense to have clutch replaced at same time, she's done 81k and I thought like others have said that its generally thought that if you get to that mileage and beyond you have "one of the good ones."
Anyway, I had already made the decision before reading your thread to have the IMS bearing replaced with an upgraded one, I have dropped it off today at Sport & Classic in Knutsford who are also replacing the RMS.
My eyes watered when I was quoted £1800 inc VAT but compared to the bill you are facing I am more then happy to proceed as I feel as well as giving me the confidence that I should never hear the dreaded sound form the engine it will also add value at sell on time so It's a no brainer really.

but your doing the write thing, if you can budget it, then get what you can done at the same time. Keep us updated, always nice to know people are willing to keep these amazing machines rolling. goodluck pal
