I'm looking into getting a smart phone I think ?

But I'm completely flummoxed as to what is out there, I underestand all the individual bits avaialble eg GPRS, WIFI etc but what sort of packages/phones/pda's are out there.

I want email either by GPRS (or WIFI) if avaialable, if I can ditch my laptop for comms work that'd be great.

Obviously some PH experience is called upon.

not many phones have WiFI - it drinks battery life, and hotspots are not that widespread yet in the UK.

Id get something triband with GPRS

try www.expansys.com under smartphones

everything is a size vs functionality trade off - the smallest smartphones are good but difficult to use for email etc...the largest like the Nokia 9200 etc are great to use like a mini laptop, but cumbersome for a phone.

Ive had a few over the years - currently on a Sony Ericsson P900 - does the email thing, internet is OK using Opera, variety of input methods - keyboard (on new model) stylus (like a Palm) or on screen keyboard, syncs with Outlook etc, and has a huge range of software available.

I second the Sony Ericsson. I have the P800 at the moment and it is the only phone I have kept for over a year. The P910i is coming out soon and will have a thumb keyboard and Memory Stick Duo Pro support. Great phones. Also worth a look is the Motorola MPx. This has wifi support and a keyboard. It runs Windows Mobile but isn't out till Jan.

910i is out now. Keypad is next to useless and you don't need it.

Sounds like you want 3G mate.

Just watch out if you go with a 3 mobile. They only allow access to certain sites ie their own. Will be a problem if you need to access a different email server.
