Hello.

The one thing I want to change on my newly-acquired 996 Turbo Tiptronic is the soundtrack. I'd like it to sound as much like the 996 GT2 as possible. Was the OEM Porsche GT2 system made by Akrapovic?

I've been looking at (and listening to) a lot of different manufacturers' aftermarket solutions. I've noticed that quite a few of them have different versions of their exhausts for Manual and Tiptronic. Can anyone tell me why this is the case? I didn't realise that exhaust choice might be determined by gearbox type. confused

The ones I like the sound of at the moment are:
- Fabspeed Maxflo v1
- Fabspeed muffler bypass with sport cats
- Europipe Stage 1 Quiet (Stage 2 Loud would be better but it says "not recommended on Tiptronic")

Cheers. thumbup

I stand to be corrected here but I understand that the 996GT2 and Turbo share the same exhaust from factory, and to your second point the transmission has no bearing on this either it's one and the same.

Also take a look at miltek, tubi and cargraphic for exhaust options.

But they sound very different. On the test drives it sounded like the differences were down to the exhausts.

That's exactly what I thought which is why I find it odd that so many manufacturers (Europipe and Fabspeed, for example) list different exhausts for manual and Tiptronic. Europipe even go so far as to say "Not recommended for Tiptronic".

I've heard the Milltek; it doesn't sound different enough to the standard exhaust.

I'm considering Tubi but from what I've heard there's quite a lot of drone.

I hadn't thought of Cargraphic. I'll check them out.

Thanks. smile

I'd be interested to know the reason for this too.
I fitted the Stage 2 'loud' around 5 1/2 years ago to my manual and it's never thrown up any issues and sounds pretty cool.
Maybe worth giving Stef @ Europipe a call...a very helpful bloke and always up for a deal!

Fairly sure they're don't, due to the difference in the K16/24 turbos flanges. Though like you, I stand to be corrected smile

And OP, there's a used Fabspeed for sale here if you think it's worth a punt?

I test drove the 996 Turbo (which I bought) and the 996 GT2 back-to-back and they sound quite different. The GT2 has a lovely hard-edged off-boost bellow that the Turbo is sadly lacking. This is the noise I'm after. I thought I was on a hiding to nothing but RPM (and other tuners that I've spoken to) said that the Turbo can be made to sound just like the GT2. It's just a matter of finding the right exhaust. smile

Thanks. I saw that this morning. smile I haven't quite finished researching the different options yet but this is on my shortlist for when I have.

X50 turbo & GT2 have same part
'Standard' turbo has a different part

Leigh, turbo housing exhaust flange is same on all cars, identical gaskets etc so I guess the differences must be internal.

Hi Andy,

Fair enough, knew there was a 'difference' somewhere but not quite sure. Only reason I thought they were different is I was going to fit a Cargraphic system on mine that came off a GT2, and was told it wouldn't fit. Perhaps it was from a 993 confused

the reason why some exhaust manufacturers say tht it is not suitable for tiptronic is that they developed it on a manual, and then when they put it on a tiptronic, because of the gearing, it probably ended up droning too much.

That is why when we developed the switchable exhaust, we developed it on a tiptronic first, removed all drone and resonance, and then moved the exhaust to a manual,

Our switchable exhaust works on both.

All turbo variants (996 turbo/s/x50/gt2 have the same exhaust system. The non 996 turbo versions are slightly, and I mean slightly less restrictive. They all fit each other, same gaskets etc. doesn't matter whether you are fitting to a k16 or k24 turbo -all the same

Sorry, I should have been more specific, I was referring to the exhaust, but same applies for turbochargers too, K16 on the turbo & K24 for X50 and GT2.

Not sure why you would want the 996 turbo to sound like a gt2 - they both sound terrible. Really cannot see any noise difference in a gt2 compared to a turbo, other than the difference in boost noise becuase of the different turbos.

My GT2 sounded a lot different to the 6T I have now.
It had a standard exhaust on also.
6T sound quite throaty on initial start up when cold, once warmed up too muted IMO and if I was keeping I would certainly be changing the pipe.

Much as I regard the exhaust note of my 6T as its Achilles heel, when it's loud enough to be worth listening to, my senses are usually fully engaged on watching the world fly at me, and making sure that I don't fly into it the wrong way. No brain processing power left for me to listen to the soundtrack, I'm afraid...

They do sound different but my point was that I would not copy one to sound like the other - there are a lot of exhausts that sound better than both even though i believe ours, when open, sounds amazing. Exhausts are such a personal choice but for me performance is the first factor, then noise when changing an exhaust - that is hard to do of course

Gt2 gearbox has different gearing to the turbo.
I think the majority of the noise difference you are hearing is down to the lack of soundproofing in the 2 Bill.

Hi Bill,
My turbo (tiptronic) was just too quiet when I got it, having previously had a C2 with PSE. I wanted something with a bit more sound effect but not too loud (as in boyracer loud smile ).
Having considered the various options and not having a bottomless pit budget I plumped for a Milltek - 100 CEL cats. Fitted by AMD at Thurrock (Essex) as they were doing special offer 1/2 price remap when fitted with a Milltek. They're still doing this offer and here's the link
http://www.amdtuning.com/special.offers.cfm
Milltek is not the loudest but the remap has made a real difference! What was a really quick car is now mentally fast!
Don't know where you're based but AMD also have fitting centres in Northampton and Harrow.
Feel free to pm me if you want any more details.

I loved the sound of the GT2. Absolutely loved it. biggrin If the 9E switchable exhaust sounds better than that then I'm in.

I'm not interested in increasing performance: it's plenty fast enough as it is. I just want to improve the sound.

Thanks Jez. They really did sound quite different, especially off-boost.

There was a 996 Turbo with a Milltek at RPM when I test drove mine. I only heard it at idle but I didn't think it sounded different enough to the standard exhaust to be worth changing to. Maybe I need to spend a bit more time with one.

Do you have any sound clips that you could send to me? smile

I've got a milltek on my 2002 manual turbo. In my view it sounds very different to the standard system, especially on boost.
It also sounds very nice when starting from cold and a guess the compromise is when your nit using the power, it's reasonably quite whilst holding steady throttle and cruising at motorway speeds.
