Got notification via the RTI (real time information) function of our PAYE software, that my (NINO) National Insurance Number has changed. Why would this be the case? Is this sinister? I thought NI Numbers never changed and stayed with you for life. Am I an unwitting victim of identity theft (was rather attached to that number)? Apparently another person has been allocated this number and is using it still, but I've never been informed of a change by HMRC until now (doesn't even have a "D" on the end of it), and even then I've only just picked it up, as I do the payroll.

I've had quite a number of employers over the years, but I've always used this NI No. and these are on all my P60s, I even have the credit card sized NI card somewhere in the house, with this number, so I'm pretty sure I'm not an illegal immigrant.

Will any note that I had this previous NI number be made in HMRC computers, should my pension contributions go awry. Will I even remember it when I'm first eligible for a pension at the age of 85+ (I don't think for a minute, that 68 will be the date of my retirement)? Seems very strange.

So let the conspiracy theories commence :-)

Call and query it - its odd you didn't get informed before it happened.

However, its a common myth that NI numbers are always unqiue - they are sometimes re-used and duplicates are not that uncommon.

I read something about this last week in an accountancy mag, I think the notice you have received might be in error. Ring and check.

They had been sending out this notices omitting the letter suffix in error and then you put that into your software and it wont accept it or send the rti reports.

Called that number before posting actually, and the Letter suffix is a throwback to the old days apparently, as the A, B, C or D are now defunct apparently. They have confirmed that the details are indeed changed, but what can you do to find out why they have been changed (very little it would seem)
