ive recently joined the gym to help shift the last few pounds and mainly stomach fat following my diet change.( more of as permenant thing than a diet) i lost 2 stone to bring me in line with my BMI, etc.

diet: all fresh, very little bread, normally get my 5 a day. always stay hydrated.

im 21, 5 foot 10, skinny but with a bit of a bulgy stomach. my gym is at my leisure club, and consists of bike, treadmill, rowing machine, stepper, and the usual weight machines, but no racks other than up to 20kg dumbbells

the things i want to gain from the gym are, loss of belly fat, tone arms and legs, wouldnt mind building a 6 pack but i understand i need to shed the fat first.

what sort or routine do i need to be doing?

currently i do 10k on the bike in about 30 mins, then 3 x 10 reps on the bench press and the weights where you push your arms together on the pad ( cant think of the name) then about 150 steps on the step machine. or a 10 min row on the rowing machine.

i try to repeat 3 times a week.

what about suplements/ protein shakes, will they really help? anything else i need to do?

thanks.

Hmm, where to start?!

It sounds like you're an ectomorph (like myself) with little muscle and a bit too much fat.

Personally I'd largely ditch the cardio and start lifting some heavy weights. Google total body workouts for ectomorphs and look for programs focusing on compound lifts / movements (ie squats, bench press, deadlifts etc). Look to do 3 decent sessions a week. This will do more for fat loss than steady state cardio, but bear in mind also that you will have to look at what you eat or any training / exercise will be largely worthless.

Great advice but he might need a new gym to do that.

Lots of body weight and cardio. Dumbells to 20kg will be good for shoulders and arms but for chest, you'll soon out grow them.
