pertronix ignitor 2 ford essex motorcraft worth the money??
Discussion
Hi,
I'm planning to install a Pertronix ignitor II (Adaptive Dwell control), Pertronix 40.000 volt Flame Thrower Coil and Low Resistance spart plug wire set. The total set cost's 469 euro (about 400 Pounds?) in The Netherlands. I've got some questions. I hope someone can answer them:
- Is it worth the money?
- Do I need to replace my standard spark plug wire set for optimal results?
- Do I need ignition II or is ignition I ok?
- Does anyone have experience with this ignition set?
Thanks!

I have had a Pertronix Billet distributor installed in my Ford 5.0 for several years and it has been flawless, no messing with points or dwell and after sitting for the winter it fires right up. I have the ignitor II module installed and have run "stock" 8.0 mm spiral core Moroso plug wires. I purchased but have not yet installed a Pertronix rpm limiter but it is one of the reasons I originally bought the distributor.
I would think my experience with the V8 version would hold true for the other models in the line.
Best wishes,

Pertronix are big in the states and get a good name.
As with anything..if you want to throw a way a 30 plus year old dizzy and replace it with a new one it will definitely be better...Any modern electronic ignition will always be an improvement over old tech.
As for leads..Well you can have the best dizzy set up in the world but if the leads are s
te then it will misfire....Good leads are a must, more important than the rest of it to be honest..
It might be worth looking at Aldon and MSD as alternatives to get some benchmark costs..

Look up http://www.aldonamethyst.co.uk/ OR http://www.accuspark.co.uk/Blackbox.htm (99.95 GBP!!!)) for modern 'lock up your dissy' programmable ignitions.

Powerspark is all well and good BUT!
The issue with crossflows running bigger pistons, cams and compression ratios was the ability to tune in a better advance curve characteristic..
Bosch and Fomoco dissys were all pretty fixed and tamper proof and didn't allow any great degree of tuning..The lucas based dizzy could be modified to provide for a greater degree of advance to suit a tuned engine..
The powerspark is an OK electronic ignition mod but does it provide for a tuned advance curve matched to the engine specs?
The issue on a modded high comp cammmed engine is to allow it to run without detonation..This was very difficult to achieve with anything other than a lucas based dizzy back in the day..especially running comps of 10:1 or more. Its harder today with unleaded fuels which run hotter than 4 star.
Doubtless now a modern ignition system and modified dizzy will be a more readily available out of the box solution But the decision is based on the need for advance curve, not just electronic ignition..

The Accuspark stealth unit does not have a vacuum input so of limited use on road engines, and no preconfigured maps are available. The Amethist is a much better option if you want a fully mappable system.Adrian@
