I have just seen a Vauxhall Carlton in Morse earlier, I haven't seen one for years. What also is rare or extinct now?

Austin Princesses. In years of going to car shows, and about two or three years of being a keen photographer of rare metal, I was only able to photograph my first Princess last August. I haven't seen one since, except for the Wolseley 2200 at Gaydon.

I couldn't help remarking the other day about how scarce Vauxhall Novas had become when I saw a K-reg one parked at the side of the road, but it doesn't really bother me because they're completely charmless.

I'd imagine the Carlton was an ideal candidate for banger racing. Don't see many MkI Mondeos these days - now 20 years since launch.

Vauhall Viceroy - my old man had one as a company car and let me drive it when I passed my driving test. Never saw another one on the road back then and never seen one since. Thing was dripping in velour if I recall.

Be honest, when was the last time you saw one. 19 on auto trader at the mo.

I saw a mint condition Maestro yesterday.

I also regularly see another local Maestro which was one of the CKD export kits, finally constructed in the early 2000's.

Although they're not as bad as they're made out to be, I still wouldn't have one if you gave it to me.

Citroen BX, Peugeot 405, Granada Scorpio. As technology moved from simple mechanics to black boxes, so the old car became uneconomic to run.

Certainly during the summer months, I see more cars on he road per 1980 than 1980 to 2000.

Manufacturers try to sell us the lie that is recycling but the reality is, that the greenest cars are those that stay on the road longer. I know of cars 10 years old being scrapped because of basic electromechanical failures.

Will we ever get back to a car that is simple to fix and truly economical to run?

Chrysler 180, Mitsubishi Starion & Colt Sapporo, Vauxhall Royale, this list could go on and on. Some good old cars nearly vanished now.

You didn't see many Chrysler 180s in their day. The had pretty unburstable mechanicals but as with many cars of the era - rust would quickly kill them.

If we are talking about cars that were not common that are almost extinct then the Talbot Tagora was one of the greatest but I don't think that's what this thread is about. Cars like the Cavalier were very common.

How long before Citroen C6s disappear.

There's a dead Maestro in a shed in a little village not very far from me in the Limousin area of France. A couple of years ago I drove past a forecourt in the middle of French nowhere and spotted a Princess. Nearly ricked my neck...

There's a Carlton up the road from me (might even be a Lotus Carlton, I'll have a look next time I'm at my sisters, lives at the end of her street). Haven't seen any wedge shaped Rover 200's (or for that matter any decent number of Rovers in general though there does seem to be a healthy number of MG's pottering about) for a long time ditto the Austin Metro (had two, great handling but thirsty on the longer runs thanks to the four speed boxes).

You don't seem to see as many MK3 Golfs as MK2s.

Actually you see very few cars with letter year numberplates these days. I blame cheap credit, high bills and that stupid scrappage scheme.

I quite often see a tatty looking blue SD1 in Ely, T reg I think, certainly pre-facelift. He had quite a lot of fun in the snow.
