Looking to SL500 & convert to LPG

Just wondered if buying an SL & converting it to run on LPG. The aim is to run a comfortable V8 car on better MPG. On petrol around town 20mpg so with LPG being 1/2 petrol should get double the mileage for the same price? What's the performance like? Anyone who has one can shed some light please.

The SL500 is a true classic so converting it to LPG would ruin it and cost a fortune to be done.I`m not sure if its technically possible? and there is no room in the boot for the LPG tank,unless you remove the petrol tank!!All that expense you would have to drive it for ten years just to get your money back??..... Please leave these lovely Mercs standard and they will last for ever.
If you want better MPG why not consider a 320? same beautiful car with less grunt.My SL320 does about 25/26 around town.Last week I did 500miles in cruise control across France and got over 35mpg.
