Hi
Can you help?
My wife's car makes a strange whirling sound intermittently when started from cold. Not necessarily too old outside, just after being stood for say 4 hours.

This happens about once a week and the local garage have no idea what it is.

It goes up with revs and usually stops after about 30 seconds.

It's not a screech like an old fan belt, it's almost like an amplified full pump sound that a mini copper makes.

I have a video recording of the sound if that will help?

The car has about 12k miles on the clock, 1.2 petrol.

Only a guess, but being in sympathy with engine revs it such sounds like a dry bearing to me.

If it's a screeching noise, then a slipping alternator belt is more likely.

But if a bearing, then with a ballrace in cold weather grease lubricant can become stiff, resulting in the balls skiding in the race. This damages both the race and balls - as a consequence the likelihood is the problem will get worse.

If so, then the bearing is probably located in one of the auxilary units (alternator, aircom pump, tensioner pulley etc). My guess would be a tensioner pulley - cambelt pulley?
