Selling a bike on ebay

Evening all,

I've popped my bike on ebay, I'm moving to single speed for a change.

I'm expecting >£400 for it and am hoping for someone to collect, however there is a lot of interest asking for me to deliver via courier.

For something of this value/size do you think it's safe (especially thru the bay) Anyone done it before?

Sending the bike should be safe. But I wouldn't post it for an eBay customer as it's too risky.

You do need a bit of luck. I sold a nearly new bike via ebay a few weeks ago which i listed for local pick up only. It generated quite a bit of interest but i did get a lot of enquiries from people asking if i would post it. I had to relist the item a couple of times due to timewasters bidding on the item and i did then offer to get a box for it and arrange a courier but as luck would have it i had a guy who clicked on the buy it now and who collected it from me with cash no problems at all.

I had the same thing last year, I put the bike up with Local Pick up and had no end of interest from people wanting it posted.

In the end a guy purchased it, sent me a box, and arranged the courier at his cost, it was a bit of a PITA but it got rid of it.

The other issue with this is receiving the money via Paypal as they take their cut too.

Ive curently got my stumpjumper on there ending today, and id be quite mad if someone won it and then wanted postage when it clearly states pickup only .

Lots of bikes are sold 'collection only' you do of course really limit your customer base.

I've sold a lot of bikes on eBay, all couriered, Mountain Bikes rather than Road so you can usually not worry too much about damage in transit. My last DH bike is now hitting trails in Portugal and some bit of my last trail bike are on Cypress.

You do need to be realistic though, if you're not prepared or able to at least strip the wheels, bars, rear derailleur, pack everything so Pat doesn't destroy the spoke by standing on it and have/buy/borrow/steal a box and packaging stuff and work out the cost before you post the ad, which pretty much requires you to do all of the above and then weigh it. Don't bother.

I put my Trek Fuel EX on Pinkbike last week for £900 and sold it in 24hrs. No fees no agro.

I had a long conversation with the buyer and he didn't mind paying by bank transfer in the end.

I shipped the bike with Direct Courier Solutions for £22 + £8 addl insurance (up to £1000) and they collected it from my office and delivered it in 24hrs.

He's happy, I'm happy (ish... I still lost £600 in a year...)
