Hi all!

Just got my race licence the other week and I am now at the point where I need to register for a championship to start racing, I've still got a few things to sort but they shouldn't take long so hoping to have my first race around August time. I've been to watch lots of racing lately and the MK1 Mazda Mx-5s have always caught my eye with the closest racing I've seen! Last year it was no question Ma5da racing but this year the grids aren't what they used to be and the BRSCC are now on the scene, so my question is which championship to join? Is there any difference in the racing standards? Or skill levels? Obviously I can check dates of the races and their location. Is their anyone on here that has raced in more than one championship or know the differences?

Also, of anyone has MK1 Mx-5 they would like to sell let me know!

Thanks for reading,
Jake

I have found the people at http://www.ma5daracing.com/ very helpful and capable of giving unbiased advice. There are contact details on the site.

Hi Jake,

Just saw your NSSCC pictures on 10/10ths. Can understand you looking at the Mx5s rather than the NSSCC. You can be competitive without spending fortunes.

Given your location I'd give AK Automotive a call (01207544071) as they run a couple of cars in the BRSCC championship and know their stuff.

In terms of which championship it really depends what you want. BRSCC offers good grids with people to race with, whatever your ability and good stability. Max5 offers good grids (although shared with Mk3s) but is slightly less competitive (with less talented drivers IMHO) and more gentlemen racer. Ma5da (or whatever its called this week) is now less appealing with small grids (mixed with mk3s and MX150R kit cars) which leads to strung out races with no one to race (expensive trackday really).

HTH and good luck with whatever you choose.

Dan

You could always try CSCC Future Classics or modern classics. Mk1s are eligible for both and Mk3s for modern classics.

40 min races give good value for money and driving standards are good and you can share with another driver (there's a pit stop) to share costs.

Both series are multi class and multi marque so different to max5 or ma5da racing or BRSCC but none the worse for that, just different. There's a few mx5 racing in these series already.

Seriously Andy??? I know its a running joke, your blatant and somewhat annoying promotion of CSCC series but for fk's sake! He asked which Mx5 series should he look at, not any old Multi-class, Multi-marque championship.

FTLOG, give it a rest!!!!! rolleyes

Dan, if you are still involved with Lotii you could race one of those with us too. Elise's would be great cars in Modern Classics and we have one racing with us already, too! You never know, you might even enjoy it. Lol.

And the OP may not be aware that MX5s can be competitive in non one make series - what's wrong with pointing that out? Not everyone has an encyclopaedic knowledge of club motorsport or uses the search function to look up alternatives. It's all about making people aware of options, that's all.

And note, in the Modern Classics thread, an MX5 racer specifically asked me to contact them because he wanted to know if he could get a late entry to our particular multi-class, multi-marque series at Cadwell this weekend and he admitted that he wouldn't have even known about the race if I hadn't posted info about it on a forum.

Don't really understand why you are getting so uppity really ;-)

Funny andy97 how you don't bother to make the OP aware of the many other multi-marque, multi-class series which would be an option for an MX5?

Having your posts which are very repetitive and largely irrelevant to the original topic cluttering up nearly every thread in this section is quite irksome.

Don't read them then. Why would I offer advice on a rival series? You'll find that I offer advice on other series such as the 360 mrc 6 hour race, Monoposto, sports 2000 and clubmans, on this and other forums and am very happy to help any one that wants, having been involved in club single seater as a (crap) driver, Tin Tops and as team member in britcar and British gt.

It's a free country and people are free to support their own series if they wish, if they don't that is their own fault.

Thanks for the replys,

I don't want to join a class structured championship or series because of the difference in cars, hence why I want race Mazdas as from what I have seen is competitive motorsport and very close racing. With regards to Northern saloons it is great to watch fast cars flying around a circuit but the racing is very spaced out especially between classes! If I use the track car I currently have (and tweek it for racing) I would get put into a class with only one other car! And is likely for me to be driving around by myself.

With that said BRSCC may be the best option but if ma5da is better for beginners then I won't rule them out for my first race.

I will give AK Automotive a call and see what they can help me with as I may need on event support.

Thanks,
Jake

Good call. I'm sure you would be able to get an arrive and drive in any series that interested you. Good luck.

It may be worth trying to sort something out for Croft round of the Ma5da series in September if you want to give it a try before a full season next year.

I'm planning on having my first race in August as I've spent quite a lot to get started this year so want more than one weekends racing. So weighing it up the options for the first race, I've put in some advantages and disadvantages-

Race with Ma5da -

Pembrey 24/25th August
Four races
£375 entry
Lots of traveling and I had to google what the circuit looks like

Then

Croft September
£375 entry
Three races
Local circuit and I've been round a few times so I shouldn't come last

Or

Race with BRSCC
September
Donnington Park
£330 entry
Only Two races
Looks a really good circuit but I've never been so may come last

Then

October
Silverstone international
£330 entry
Again two races
A circuit I am dying to try with a scary looking flat out first corner!

Even laying out the options it's still hard for me to decide which two weekends to do, BRSCC have the better circuits but Ma5da have the the track time. For this year I think track time is needed even if I go BRSCC next year for the competition.
Edit: but in saying that I want to start racing for the competition and not sharing a grid..... My head hurts!

Dan,

I'm from beamish so not far from you. Are you racing at the moment? What in?

Thanks
Jake

Hi Jake.

Simply for the fact that the BRSCC events will happen I would enter that championship. The Ma5da events are a bit random and change all the time. Example, the Ma5da Pembrey event has been and gone.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Hi Jake,

I race an S1 Elise. Have done a few NSSCC races and I'm doing the Trackday Trophy race at Brands GP at the end of July.

I would definitely go with the BRSCC as its looking increasingly likely the Ma5da races will not happen. Don't think you'd be last anyway. There's a big range of talent on the Mx5 grid. Donington is an awesome circuit and there's certainly plenty room at Silverstone. You'll have to get the hang of bump drafting very quickly to do well there though.

If you are going to do Donington I'd try and get in a trackday before the race as it takes a bit time to get used to it.

Bit OT but I don't really understand why my post was removed asking the OP to contact my company for a view on the different race series available as 'self promotion' yet people who organise/run race series can 'advertise' for competitors on the forums.

Is there a fee you have to pay to do this?

Cheers
