ok, so here goes, i've been employed by the same company now for nearly 10 years, gradually made my way up the ladder and am now the MD's "right hand man", his words not mine!!! this is going to sound daft, but, i think i've had enough and want a change. i currently work in the insurance sector, buildings, not motor, and feel that i need to do something a little more useful for want of a better phrase.
however, there is an issue, i have a criminal record from around 20 years ago which will stop me from doing quite a lot of things i imagine, i'm also heavily tattooed, which i know will also put a lot of people/companies off, on this basis, i'm very lucky in that my current employer couldn't give two hoots about my record or my tattoo's, so my question is, do i stay put in the current climate, and put up with being slightly bored of the same job, or do i put myself out there and see what comes along??
i'm not proud of what ive done in my past, and can honestly say it was a single conviction and have never been in trouble since or previously, so would appreciate it if people kept their opinions on "crims" to themselves, i'm more than aware that i'm stupid!!!!
i would like to be involved with something of worth to people, possibly working with disabled children or adults, but fear that a record of any type may rule this particular avenue out, even though the conviction was nothing to do with anything like that.
anyway, that's where i'm at, any help or advice appreciated.

Tough switch to make and I think you have highlighted two significant hurdles.
Re tatoos - if you were dressed on long sleeves and long trousers, would I know ? Or is half your face a Maouri canvass ?
Any sexual or violent images amongst them ?
Sounds like you are on a very good wicket at the moment, so I would suggest a gradual process. Many people experience the situation you are in, and my advice remains the same.
Don't do anything hasty !
Try volunteering at weekends, or evenings, approach your local council and see if you can become a relief career on weekends. Try to build up some skills and knowledge in the area you are interested in.
Would your MD consider two half days a month where you could volunteer in some community activity ? Spin as good publicity for the company and giving you wider people skills.
There is likely to be a number of private institutions careering for Diasabled children nearby, maybe see if you can shadow a career there for a day, or talk to them about your CV and see if they can help you.
CRB will be a problem, so focus on Adult facilities, I think.
Best of luck, it sounds like you want to try to find a personally rewarding experience, and I suspect the Voluntary sector can offer this, without necessaily needing to give up the day job ?

hadn't really thought about voluntary avenue, but it's definitely something worth giving some thought and research.

i will have to see what comes my way and go from there, but more research on voluntary route for the time being.

Sounds sensible. Hard to comment without more details on why you're unhappy where you currently are, but it sounds like your boss genuinely trusts you given your role and the length of your relationship. Given that, he won't want to lose you and would hopefully be quite open to making some changes to your role to ensure that your job offers you what you want.
Obviously if you're just done with everything to do with the industry that you're in, then so be it, there's nothing he can do.
to be honest we are only a small company so there is nowhere else position wise for me to go.
my main reason for wanting to go is just a blatant disregard for the people within the industry, i guess it's just life and after all the world revolves around money, but there must be a more rewarding way to spend my time. the people i have to deal with on a daily basis are just not very pleasant to deal with.
i am still looking into the voluntary route for the time being, as i take on board what most have said and agree that i am on to a good thing with regards to a stable job and income.

Why not ask the MD to start up a "special project" of your own, a sideline income stream for the company that could open up new markets? If he gives you assistance, but autonomy, you may find this more rewarding that being his "number 2"?
