Good morning all,

I'm starting to have an itch to move from my Evo 8 to an M5, having spent the last few weeks reading up the M5 I'm happy enough with most elements and check list etc.

Has anyone moved from a rally rep to the M5 before and care to share their experience with me?

It's always been a weekend/Friday car as I have a Saab for the daily grind, the wife drives a 330 Conv so to a degree I'm happy with rear drive.

Pros of my Evo

1. 400 bhp/400lbs torque at 1400kg - it's quick.
2. Quite a rare sight.
3. Very very good A & B road performance.
4. All weather performance.

Cons

1. Noisy, all the while but especially on a long journey.
2. Fear of parking anywhere but my own drive.
3. Every boy racer views you as a challenge.
4. Unsubtle!

M5 pros

1. Power & sound.
2. Subtle looks.
3. Will fit the family, comfortably & quietly.

Cons?

1. Less urgency then the Evo?
2. ?

Any opinions welcome.

The cars are chalk and cheese really.

One thing i can say is that the M5 will do more of the things the Evo does well than vice versa. And be ready to be astonished at the way it gathers speed, even when well deep into 3 figures....

Can't really be compared.

Range and MPG of the M5 will not be a problem if it is a weekend car, but I just wonder if it is a A/B road bomber you are after, if the size, weight and slight detachment (especially SMG) will make is less suited for that role?

It is epic on an unrestricted autobahn, but I never really consider taking mine for an A/B blast.

Would an E90/92 M3 not be a better option, unless space dictates an M5?

Wouldn't really think the M5 is much of a weekend car....its more of a daily super saloon.....

Brilliant car, but not special enough IMHO to be reserved solely for the weekend...

Ok, I can perhaps help here. My garage has an M5 and a 500bhp Evo VI which I've owned from new.

The Evo is a really fantastic car and while the M5 is not going to match it round tight corners in some ways the joy of a large powerful rear driven car is more than scratching around corners at a higher speed in a 4wd.

Performance wise the Evo will kill the M5 upto about 80 but then it levels out and the M5 is a seriously quick car and very good fun.

I tell people who ask that the M5 is the best car I've ever owned and I truly mean that, I have fun with it and enjoy it even if I'm driving slowly. The Evo is sometimes a pain when driven long distances or slowly. The M5 is obviously more comfortable and to be honest one thing I enjoy is that people don't mess me around in it like they do in the Evo or the 996 GT3 that they both share garage space with.

The M5 does things so much better than the Evo, I love all my cars but if I had to get rid of them I think the M5 would be the keeper.

Having came from an Impreza Sti with roughly the same figures as your evo , i can agree 100% with what Fred said in the previous post he got it bang on.

As previously said , anything up to 80 ish then the sti/evo would be close but anything above that then the m5 does not stpp pulling and theres not much will keep with it.

The things i dont miss about my impreza is the horrible ride quality from coilovers and stiffer arbs etc , and also you get all sorts of cars trying to goad you into racing them etc and it could attract a lot of unwanted attention

The m5 is understated and although you will have to rev it a bit more compared to your evo , but once its above 5000rpm it doesent waste any time in getting going.

Basically its a luxuary car and when you dont want to attract attention and just have a relaxing drive , then you can , especially if you have any passengers in the car it is pure comfort.

However when your in the mood... then its an animal.

I used to laugh at the no replacement for displacement argument but it's true.When you go back to a small blown engine after one of these it feels just that- small and blown.Its really apparent when accelerating from high speed where the blown engines power just seems thin and strained.

Going from an Evo to the E60 is graduation day.

Guys,

Thanks for the replies and shared experiences, Grant & Fred especially as you have answered my question exactly as I hoped.

Having been to view one today, I think the move is imminent.

I'm viewing more over the coming weeks or so, so if their is any advice you can offer on what to watch out for I would be grateful.

For weekends alone I would keep the evo theres too many beemers about as is...and yours cons..arent they pros really?

Yes to a degree but I work in Aberdeen so my weekly round trip is 600 miles+ hence the saab. I take the evo once a month but it is a hard work driving that distance.

The M5 would see more road time I think.

The Evo really is a fantastic car but the commitment to own and drive it is starting to wain.

I really like my M5, though I have not had it long. I am in the USA so mine's a stick.

Its a strange car really.
Really good at loafing along quietly and in comfort, with nice suspension.
Then next minute a rabid dog.
Pity about the gas consumption, thats the only complaint (what did I expect)?

Mark, the fuel consumption of my Evo is worse than the M5 so that might be a gain for the OP

Im not sure I do. I have to put diesel in it. Uses 700L+ per day. Also its 0-60 time is st. Really st.

Thanks for your post, I think one of the elements that attracts me to the M5 is the split personality of comfortable cruiser to full on quick.

The Evo does one job albeit very very well.

Not overly bothered on fuel, the Evo can dismiss a tank within 150 miles when pushing on. The same with running costs, I intend to take one of the BMW assured warranties on it and have the slush fund that goes with Evo ownership.

I loved my Evos and still dream of my Evo VIII MR FQ 340, a sensational point-to-point, all weather road weapon.....what a great car that was.....the one car I'd drive if my life depended on it.

The M5 is a different beast, but just as wonderful in its way......the comfort, the luxury, the quality, the touring ability......and that glorious V10 banging through the gears in S6.

I've only recently moved from the E60 to the F10 and, believe it or not, there is a part of me that thinks WTF have I done!!

Go for it....E60s are amazing, but only if you take the time to get to know them, especially how to drive them smoothly.

I'm interested in your F10 comments because I imagined that is how I would feel. Now that my E61 sounds proper with the silencers gone I am even more wrapped up in it. The F10 although newer, quicker and with better handling I cannot see myself enjoying one as much as I do the E6x. That is down to one thing, the Engine! The S85 is just an EPIC thing!
