I am going on holiday at the end of August and really not sure which way to go. I will be using the tunnel. Ideally I wn to do about 7-8 hrs driving in France in one day to make the second day an easy run. A stop ver una nice town would be good!

I'd like some fun but don't want to take for ever!

Any ideas

7-8 hours will get you from Calais to St Trpoez so it's doable in a day.

Edit: If you want to split it up and want a bit of fun then do Calais to Grenoble on the Autoroute on day 1 and then do Grenoble to St Tropez over the route Napoleon on day 2 - that's a great driving road.

perfect sounds like a plan. I thought of going straight down but its quite boring. That will make it a nice trip I think.

Thanks

I did the route Napoleon last year, end of July.. It was much less fun than I expected, full of Police speed patrol... and most importantly of traffic. Was jam-packed with caravans, overloaded estates and whatever you can imagine.. even motorbikes were struggling. Ok some nice views but honestly I was expecting a better compromise.. maybe could be better at the VERY end of season ?

I then took one side D-road which was leading to pretty much nowhere and that was the single best road I drove in France.. of course.. I dont remember which one it is despite extensive Gmaps research...

What i wanted to do this year was a touch different and join the Route Napoleon much later, doing some cols and D-roads which came recommended.. You can EASILY drive to Beaune from Calais in half a day and stop there.. we did that last year and the town is just adorable to spend evening and night.. lots of B&B and VERY good restaurants. You can even squeeze in a vineyard tour if you arrive early PM.

Then following day to the "proper" roads :
